An exciting opportunity is available for a dedicated Music Teacher to join our teaching team at Michael Hall School, delivering high quality Music lessons within a supportive and ambitious learning environment.

Working hours: 08:00-17:00 2-3 days per week tbc

Contract type: Part Time Permanent.

Annual leave: School holiday dates, (excl. INSET days and other dates set by the school).

Salary: Pro Rata of FTE £28,152 - £36,051 Dependant on                         experience

Start date: 01 September 2026

Main Responsibilities

• To foster a joy and enthusiasm for music-making throughout the school in accordance with the Steiner Waldorf curriculum

• To teach class Music and Singing lessons to Classes 1 – 8 (Years 2 – 9)

• To facilitate class instrumental playing on the recorder in Classes 4-6 (Years 5-7) so that all students have the experience of learning about music through playing an instrument

• To teach the fundamentals of music theory to all pupils from Classes 6 – 8 (Years 7 – 9) both theoretically and experientially.

• To help plan, co-ordinate and implement the programme of musical events at Michael Hall.

• To help co-ordinate musical support for festivals, plays and concerts.

• To assist the Full Time Music Teacher with both the Lower School Orchestra and the Middle School orchestra

• To encourage students, with the help of the Visting Music Teachers, to learn individual instruments.

• To support Class Teachers deliver the Waldorf Music Curriculum in the context of a general education.

Planning:

• Identify clear teaching and learning objectives and specify how they will be taught

• Set tasks which challenge pupils and ensure a high level of interest and engagement.

• Make effective use of assessment information when planning lessons.

• Plan opportunities to contribute to pupils’ Music knowledge and to their personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

• Ensure a wide range of high quality extra - curricular activities are available to children including ensembles, choirs and peripatetic lessons.

• Provide high quality music support for school events

Teaching and Class Management

• Establish and maintain a safe environment and working environment which supports learning and in which pupils feel secure and confident.

• Set high expectations for pupils’ behaviour, establishing and maintaining a good standard of discipline through well-focussed teaching and positive and productive relationships.

• Maintain discipline in accordance with the school’s procedures and encourage good practice with regards to punctuality and behaviour

• Ensure pupils acquire and consolidate music knowledge, skills and understanding.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Teaching qualification/experience (e.g. Waldorf Teacher Training or PGCE, QTS etc.)
  • A degree in music or equivalent qualification

Essential Experience

  • Class music teaching within Lower (primary) and Middle (secondary) school years
  • Organising and preparing students for musical performances and events
  • Working with and leading children’s choirs

Essential Knowledge

  • A good understanding of how to be creative with concert and lesson content planning so that pupils have different challenges and experiences during their school careers

Desirable Knowledge

  • An interest in/understanding of Steiner Waldorf Education and working with an integrated curriculum

Essential Skills

  • A high level of all-round musicianship and musical knowledge
  • Good keyboard skills and the ability to competently accompany individuals/choirs
  • Leadership/conducting ability
  • Good classroom/behaviour management, and the ability to effectively manage behaviour in rehearsal/concert situations
  • Suitable IT skills
  • Working understanding of ‘Sibelius Ultimate’ or equivalent music notation programme

Desirable Skills

  • Experience working with iSAMS, CPOMS.
