About us

MetDesk’s Research & Development team sits at the intersection of operational forecasting and machine learning innovation. We develop, test and deploy new forecasting methodologies that directly impact real-world decision-making across energy, transport and other weather-sensitive sectors. Our work spans forecast verification, post-processing, climatology, and the integration of cutting-edge ML approaches with physical meteorological understanding. We operate in close collaboration with our forecast and software engineering teams to ensure research moves rapidly from concept to operational impact.

Job Description

We are seeking a talented scientist to join our Meteorological Research & Development team. Working alongside an experienced team of meteorologists and scientists you will use your expertise to both improve existing systems and help to design and prototype exciting new products.

Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities for new products or improvements to existing systems and develop these to the proof of concept stage
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in both traditional and ML-based weather forecasting
  • Work closely with our development teams to hand over prototyped solutions
  • Represent the organisation at scientific conferences and industry meetings
  • Perform verification analysis to understand forecast skill
  • Maintain and update existing archives and climatological datasets

Requirements

Essential:

  • UK resident or valid UK work permit
  • Ph.D. in Meteorology, Physics, Atmospheric Science, Data Science or a related field
  • Excellent Python programming skills
  • Experience with Git/GitHub and collaborative software development.
  • Experience using common meteorological data formats – eg, observations, satellite, grib and NetCDF
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative team environment

Desirable:

  • Experience using Python ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch to train site-based ML models
  • Pre-existing knowledge of the Transport, Renewables or Energy sectors
  • Experience working with NVIDIA’s Earth2Studio framework and associated models

Salary Range: £32,000–£50,000 per annum, depending on experience and level of responsibility. Applications are welcomed from recent PhD graduates as well as candidates with several years of relevant industry or postdoctoral experience.
