Do you believe that people thrive when they feel listened to, valued, and supported?

Do you want to be part of an organisation rooted in compassion, dignity, and hope?
If so, we’d love to hear from you.

The St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) is a volunteer‑led, values‑driven charity working alongside people facing poverty, isolation, and disadvantage. We support communities across England and Wales through thousands of volunteers—and we’re looking for someone special to help nurture, inspire, and grow our membership across

    Lancaster Central Council.

We are seeking a Membership Support Officer (MSO) who brings warmth, curiosity, and a genuine desire to walk alongside volunteers as they serve their communities.

    Why This Role Matters

Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. This role ensures they feel confident, connected, and supported in their mission to offer compassionate, practical help to those who need it most.

You’ll help strengthen existing SVP groups (“Conferences”), support the formation of new ones, and work with local leaders to build a thriving, sustainable network across the Lancaster region.

Your ability to listen deeply, encourage others, and foster positive relationships will be vital to the growth and future of the Society’s work.

    What You’ll Do

In this varied and meaningful role, you will:

    Support & Grow Membership
    • Lead recruitment initiatives and church/community appeals
    • Support new and existing Conferences, helping them grow in confidence and capacity
    • Share best practice and celebrate the great work happening across the region
    Build Relationships & Partnerships
    • Work closely with local volunteer leaders, District Presidents, and the Central Council
    • Develop links with local organisations such as foodbanks, homelessness services, refugee support networks, and more
    Strengthen Quality & Governance
    • Promote training, induction, and safeguarding
    • Assist with basic compliance, reporting, and administrative support
    • Provide monthly updates to our National Office
    Shape the Future
    • Play a key role in developing and delivering a new strategic plan for growth
    • Support the renewal of membership across the area
    What We’re Looking For

You’ll thrive in this role if you are:

    • Warm, approachable, and able to build trust quickly
    • Skilled at supporting volunteers and facilitating group discussions
    • Confident in presenting to a range of audiences
    • Organised and able to work independently
    • Someone who values compassion, dignity, inclusivity, and hope
A background in community work, pastoral support, volunteering, education, or a similar field is ideal; but equivalent experience is absolutely welcome.

An understanding of the Catholic community is helpful, though not essential; a willingness to learn is more important.

A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are required.

    Why Join Us?

You’ll be part of a supportive, mission-driven team committed to making a difference in communities across the UK. We offer flexible working, opportunities for professional development, and a chance to contribute to meaningful projects.
