About Us

The Wordsworth Trust celebrates the legacy of William Wordsworth, ‘the poet who changed the world’, and Dorothy, his sister. It looks after Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, the two Lake District properties where the Wordsworths lived for most of their adult l ives.

Dove Cottage in Grasmere is where William wrote much of his greatest poetry, and Dorothy kept her famous Grasmere Journal. Dove Cottage and the adjacent museum are at the heart of the award - winning visitor attraction Wordsworth Grasmere.

Rydal Mount, about two miles from Dove Cottage, was the Wordsworths' family home from 1813. It was acquired from the Wordsworth family in 2026; it is currently closed for restoration while the Wordsworth Trust explores how it can fulfil the property’s full potential.

The Wordsworth Trust also look after an archive, library and fine art collection dedicated to British Romanticism and the cultural history of the Lake District. At its core are the Wordsworth family manuscripts, making its collection genuinely unique: nowh ere else in Western literature can so much of a major writer’s original work still found where it was both written and largely inspired.

Through exhibitions, publications, events, workshops for schools and universities, charity partnerships, and activities in community locations for people of all ages and backgrounds, the Wordsworth Trust fulfils Wordsworth’s wish: that his poetry would ‘li ve and do good’.
