MARINE ENGINEER JOB DESCRIPTION

PURPOSE

Reporting to the Head of Maritime Operations, this post supports the Chief Engineer and Shipwright & Workshop Manager in the maintenance, repair and operation of PHQ’s historic boat collection; working with volunteers to develop their skills and supervise their activity.

DUTIES

  1. Undertake routine mechanical, electrical and woodwork tasks to maintain PHQ’s boat collection as directed by the Head of Maritime Operations (HMO), Chief Engineer or Workshop Manager.

  2. Maintain records of work carried out and materials used, liaising with the HMO and Boats Team for ordering requirements and maintaining supplies.

  3. Work with volunteers to develop individuals and supervise maintenance work where necessary. Deliver training to new and established volunteers in tool and machinery use, and the associated elements of health and safety.

  4. Undertake skipper and/or crew responsibilities in the operation of vessels afloat, including commercial charters, as directed by the HMO (training available).

  5. Operate Boathouse 4 cranes under the direction of the lifting lead, and use the forklift to unload deliveries, as required (both with training).

  6. Assist with coding, licencing and completion of maintenance logs.

  7. Preparation and cleaning of boats for open days, charters and other events.

  8. Undertake escorting duties on an ad hoc basis to facilitate movement of vessels, equipment and deliveries through the naval base access points, and undertake journeys oƯ site for work purposes.

HEALTH & SAFETY

  1. Ensure that safe working practices are always adhered to by volunteers using the workshop and that only suitably trained individuals operate machinery.

  2. Actively promote and support a positive and pro-active health and safety culture within Boathouse 4.

  3. Assist in ensuring all necessary protective clothing and equipment is worn and always used by volunteers when working with machinery or manually.

  4. Assist in ensuring the workshop is always kept clean and tidy, and that electrical machinery is used in accordance with standard safety practices.

  5. Take reasonable care of own health and safety and that of others (e.g. colleagues, volunteers, tenants, customers, visiting members of the pubic), by observing safety rules and reporting risks and hazards, near misses and accidents.

GENERAL

  1. Contribute to ensuring that all necessary Boathouse 4-related policies, working guidance, procedures and recording mechanisms are maintained and updated.

  2. Support other administrative systems associated with staƯ and volunteers in the Boathouse, as required.

  3. The postholder will be required to work flexibly. This may include undertaking other duties, if these are appropriate to the individual’s skills and abilities. Where this occurs, there will be consultation with the employee, and any necessary personal development will be considered.
