Cromford Mills is a large site with a visitor exhibition including the award-winning Arkwright Experience, a business centre, catering, and a busy events and conferencing programme throughout the year. All these activities create a beautiful, unique and vibrant place to work. The site is of international significance as a key place within the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site. Job Title: Maintenance and Site Supervisor Location: Cromford Mills, Cromford, Derbyshire Salary Range: Between £27,000 - £30,000 Full time position (37.5 hrs) Purpose of role: The Maintenance and Site Supervisor is responsible for the practical delivery and day- to-day management of maintenance and repair operations across Cromford Mills and Lumsdale. This hands-on role ensures the smooth running of the site, overseeing the caretaking duties, maintenance and repairs, health and safety compliance, and sustainable practices. You will directly supervise the maintenance team, coordinate tasks and training, and manage contractors to ensure the maintenance works are delivered efficiently and safely, supporting both the visitor experience and the upkeep of our historic buildings. This role is operationally focused and part of a wider team (staff and volunteers) who support the sites and deliver the charitable objectives of The Arkwright Society. Main Responsibilities 1. Site Oversight and Operational Management • Co-ordinate and deliver repair and maintenance needs across Cromford Mills and Lumsdale. • Direct line management and leadership of the maintenance team, including task allocation, training, and day-to-day supervision. • Commission and monitor external contractors, ensuring quality workmanship and cost-effective delivery. Where required, lead contract management with service providers and suppliers to ensure smooth site operations. • Monitor and evaluate maintenance activities and completion of tasks. • Work with the Volunteer Coordinator and other team members to recruit and • support maintenance volunteers across the built and natural estate. Implement practical project management for maintenance tasks, including scheduling and resource allocation. • Working with the Senior Leadership Team and Business Administration support, to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and legal obligations across Cromford Mills and Lumsdale. • Promote and implement practical sustainable site practices, including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and eco-friendly methods. This includes overseeing the running of the water power installation on site. 2. Heritage Conservation and Practical Maintenance • Carry out or supervise practical, skilled tasks to deliver the scheduled maintenance works on this Grade I listed site. • Work with contractors and consultants to oversee repair schemes, including grant-funded projects. • Prioritise practical and sustainable solutions for heritage conservation. • Support and equip the maintenance team and volunteers to deliver high-quality site maintenance. 3. Stakeholder Collaboration (Operational Focus) • Work with contractors, suppliers, and volunteers to ensure smooth delivery of site maintenance tasks. • Support visitor-facing teams by maintaining safe, accessible, and well- presented facilities including support with events. • Assist with practical engagement activities when needed, e.g., demonstrating maintenance work to visitors. 4. Documentation and Reporting • With business administration support, maintain accurate records of maintenance work, health and safety compliance, and equipment logs. • Prepare operational updates for the CEO and • Ensure practical compliance reporting is accurate and timely, without involvement in strategic trustee reporting. ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS Proven experience in practical site maintenance and facilities operations. Track record of delivering operational budgets and maintenance schedules. Strong practical problem-solving and task coordination skills. Experience supervising or leading small teams in operational roles. Historic site management experience, including conservation knowledge. Experience of working with charitable organisations. Qualification or training in construction, building maintenance, or health and safety compliance. Full driving licence KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Proficient in practical repair/maintenance skills for historic buildings and heritage sites. Able to plan, prioritise, and complete practical tasks efficiently. Strong attention to detail and health and safety awareness. Committed to supporting a high-quality visitor experience through safe and well-maintained facilities. Competent in Microsoft Office and other ICT tools for task management. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Strong leadership skills for motivating and supporting operational staff. Sound practical judgment for day-to-day decision-making. Effective team player and collaborator with contractors, volunteers, and colleagues. Proactive in problem-solving and maintaining operational continuity. Focused on coaching and developing the maintenance team in practical skills.
