Life on the Edge (LotE) is a partnership project, led by South Devon National Landscape, that aims to restore viable populations of some of the UK’s rarest insects living along an 80km stretch of the South Devon coast between Berry Head in Torbay and Wembury to the west of Plymouth.

The project will support the recovery of over 30 threatened invertebrates including the Long-horned Bee (Eucera longicornis), Six-banded Nomad Bee (Nomada sexfasciata), Short-necked Oil Beetle (Meloe brevicollis) , and Moon Spider (Callilepis nocturna). Expanding and reconnecting wildflower-rich cliff-top grasslands and other habitats will make a considerable contribution to the long-term recovery of many of our target species, and will benefit hundreds more.

Life on the Edge is working at a landscape-scale to deliver this, integrating an ambitious programme of habitat restoration with the necessary detail that species recovery requires.

Contract title: Life on the Edge, Eucera Longicornis Survey (£4,800 (inc. VAT))

The works apply to the stretch of South Devon coastline from Rickham Sand to Sharper’s Cove, East Prawle. Assess the populations of Eucera Longicornis at major aggregations and compare the data with previous reports. Provide habitat management recommendations and record Nomada sexfasciata if seen.

Contract title: Life on the Edge, Invertebrate Survey of Coleton Barton and Wood Huish (£7,200 (inc. VAT))

The works apply to the stretch of South Devon coastline under National Trust ownership from Froward Point to Southdown Cliffs identified in the Schedule of Works. Invertebrate survey with focus on Hymenoptera and LotE target species found in coastal grasslands with habitat management recommendations. Secondary focus on permanent grasslands.
Tertiary focus on remaining habitats including arable, and woodlands.

Contract title: Life on the Edge, Invertebrate Survey of Mill Bay to Start Point (£9,600 (inc. VAT))

The works apply to the stretch of South Devon coastline from East Portlemouth to Start Point. Invertebrate survey with a focus on Hymenoptera, but also highlighting any LotE target species. Recommend specific habitat management interventions for target species observed.
