Applications are invited for a full-time, permanent Lecturer in Education (Teaching & Scholarship) in the North Wales School of Education.

Candidates should be educated to Postgraduate degree level in a relevant subject area OR PhD, or be close to the completion.

We are seeking expertise in Primary or Secondary Education with additional experience in Mentoring and/or Professional Learning. The team supports Initial Teacher Education students in both primary and secondary, and MA students so lecturers would need to support all phases and courses.

The ability to communicate in Welsh is essential.

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

Overview

The North Wales School of Education offers a wide range of academic courses, including undergraduate and postgraduate ITE courses, part-time and full-time undergraduate BA and BSc programmes, a range of part-time and full time Masters courses (including the new National Masters in Education), full-time and part-time Education Doctorate courses (EdD, ProfDoc) full-time and part-time MRes and MPhil programmes and full-time and part-time PhD programme.

Purpose of the Job

The role holder will join the education team in the North Wales School of Education. They will support delivery of core curriculum as well as delivering future developments and innovations to the programme, including advances in teaching and research excellence within education.

The purpose of the job includes:

  • To provide quality, engaging teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of Education.
  • To provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate students, including supervision of projects.
  • To strengthen the existing links between our education research activity and the local community and within our HEI-schools partnership.
  • To engage with Welsh Government and other organisations on issues relating to Education.
  • Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.
  • Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching duties will include:

  • To establish a record of teaching excellence at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Planning, preparing and delivering lectures and tutorials at undergraduate and postgraduate level, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.
  • Delivery of quality modules that attract, engage and retain students, including designing, developing and delivering of a range of teaching materials for study at various levels.
  • Contributing to the teaching and assessment of the School’s portfolio of modules and programmes at various levels according to the needs of the School.
  • Motivate students to proactive engagement in learning and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work within agreed time constraints.
  • Keeping abreast of new professional, educational and related social, economic and technological developments.
  • Ensuring that all students are provided with a supportive learning environment and provide advice and guidance to individual students as their personal tutor.
  • Participating in Quality Enhancement procedures.
  • Supervise students during School Experience, integrating theory and practice.
  • Take a full role in the assessment of students, both academically and against the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
  • Contribute to the development of new programmes and undertaking role of module coordinator or contributing to module co-ordination.

Administrative and Wider Contribution duties will include:

  • Participating in the student recruitment and induction procedures of the School (e.g. School and University Open Days).
  • To contribute to the promotion and external profile of the School.
  • Contribute to the School's management, and participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (e.g. organisation of exams, contribute to accreditation/QA procedures (if module co-ordinator).
  • Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.
  • Maintaining accurate records and contributing to the working of the committee structures of the School and College.
  • Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School (e.g. membership of School boards and task groups, addressing/supporting under graduate and postgraduate student experience).

  • The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant subject area OR PhD or EdD or be close to the completion in a relevant subject area.
  • Qualified Teacher Status.

Desirable

  • PGCERT or HEA Fellowship.

Teaching Skills

Essential

  • Experience of teaching at higher education level and/or in the UK school sector with evidence of successful student learning outcomes.
  • Experience of module/curriculum development and delivery in higher education or school sector.
  • Awareness of current developments relating to education and teacher education and training.
  • Recent coaching/mentoring experience.
  • Awareness of issues relating to teaching in a bilingual environment.
  • Evidence of Continued Professional Development.
