Job description
We have an opportunity for a 12-month fixed term maternity cover Lecturer in Biomedical Science (Learning, Teaching & Scholarship Track) post in the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing. The School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing is renowned for pioneering teaching methods and superb facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate study. The School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing is part of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences.

Job Purpose:
To contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by contributing to teaching, assessment and administration processes associated primarily with the Undergraduate Medical School, and to undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching in the Undergraduate Medical School. This is a Post-doctoral role in Biomedical Science at the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Deliver a range of teaching, supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate programmes. The undergraduate course is delivered through a range of teaching and learning modalities, and the post holder would be expected to make a significant contribution to all of these across the curriculum.
2. Make a specific contribution to the on-going planning, development, delivery and assessment of the Learning & Teaching provision in the early years of the MBChB programme in an engaging and innovative way making use of best practice and working within Teaching and Learning strategic frameworks.
3. Contribute to pastoral care and academic supervision of students.
4. Play a supporting role in ensuring GMC requirements of Undergraduate Medical Schools are met.
5. Participate fully in examination and other assessment processes, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning. This includes marking of assessments and participation in exam boards.
6. Make a positive contribution to SoMDN & MVLS strategic initiatives, being engaged, flexible and participative in curriculum development and change.
7. Supervise individual student projects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and to contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate research students, as appropriate, to ensure their effective development.
8. Work in partnership with the UMS Manager and their Team to ensure a high quality student experience.
9. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
10. Participate in scholarship, utilising output to inform your teaching and learning practice and, as appropriate, to disseminate the findings by publication in leading journals.
11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
12. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World changers Together.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] or equivalent professional and/or teaching experience in a similar or related role.
A2. Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in one or more of the biomedical science disciplines and of teaching methods and techniques to work within the subject area.
A3. Thorough knowledge and ability to apply policy, practice and procedures including broader University and Sector (medical education) awareness.
A4. Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in the field with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and of providing pastoral care to students.
Skills
Essential:
C1. Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.
C2. Ability to work on own initiative to contribute to the activities within the subject area and wider School environment.
C3. A strong team player who can evidence constructive working relationships across disciplines and job families.
C4. Collaborative, co-operative and pro-active approach to all elements of the role.
C5. Effective organisation skills to manage time and prioritise as appropriate research, teaching and administrative responsibilities.
Experience
Essential:
E1. Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.
E2. Evidence of interest and experience in innovative and technology-enhanced learning and teaching approaches.
E3. Developing a strong track record of scholarship/research outputs compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum.
This post is full time, 35 hours per week to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
