About the Role:

We have two positions who will provide specialist knowledge to support LR’s global regulatory activities, focussed on environmental legislation, but also covering some elements of safety. Regulatory drivers will primarily originate from the IMO, the EU and IACS although other regulators will also need to be monitored and engaged with.

Represent LR in external forums including those developing industry requirements and regulations. Use this specialist knowledge and insight to support LR’s regulatory liaison, implementation and communication to colleagues and clients.

Represent or support LR’s interests within the IACS Environment Panel. Coordinate positions across disciplines in LR and support collaborative working across LR’s panel members and GPG member.

Working with other teams in LR develop and maintain accurate, up to date and user-friendly presentation material on upcoming IMO, EU and IACS regulatory requirements, including items under development and those which are coming into force. To include environmental and safety requirements taking inputs from other RA colleagues as needed. Monitor and reflect client and colleague feedback in developing the style and content of material.

Managing the implementation of statutory regulatory and classification amendments and interpretations into LR rules, regulations and procedures. Areas of responsibility are to be confirmed but will be focussed on environmental requirements that LR provides services for to the shipping industry, either to prevent pollution of the marine environment, or to support the safe transition towards a net-zero greenhouse gas emission future using alternative fuels and new technologies.

The Role 

  • Represent or support LR’s representative through our membership of the IACS Environmental Panel. Ensure that LR’s views are actively presented in order to influence ongoing discussions where appropriate, seeking input from other subject matter experts and policy owners globally as needed. Provide early advice within LR of likely outputs from the panel to support their effective implementation and communication.
  • Support LR’s active engagement with IMO in relevant meetings, especially MEPC and PPR, through suitable delegations. Work with other coordinators in RA to ensure proper LR preparation for these meetings to secure the best possible influence, insight of emerging developments, and timely communication of outcomes to clients and colleagues.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on the development of regulations at IMO, IACS, the EU and at a national level and from other industry regulatory bodies. With a primary focus on environmental regulations, but including safety regulations when necessary, in consultation with other RA colleagues help to interpret the practical statutory impact and timelines from longer term environmental legislation emerging from the IMO and the EU.
  • Take responsibility for working with other teams to keep presentation material for own area of responsibility up to date and reflecting regulatory developments. Presentation material can be used by Regulatory Affairs and other LR colleagues for regulatory seminars, webinars and presentations to ensure LR is a Trusted Advisor on new developments. Analyse Q&A sessions to identify specific questions and themes which RA needs to take account of when developing further client communications, or when participating in relevant working groups.
  • Interpret statutory service delivery implications of complex regulatory requirements. Define areas where LR can make service delivery choices and areas where LR must seek flag agreement for interpretations. Provide necessary support to seek confirmation from flags and to provide options to LR product/service development teams.
  • Pursue continuous professional development including maintaining a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness, and a personal contacts network to support informal external engagement.
  • Contribute colleague and client feedback, and own analysis, to continuous improvement of RA outputs and materials such as IMO meeting reports, our Future IMO Legislation report and presentation material, and LR product development and service delivery. To include being aware of opportunities provided by new technology and/or organisational changes within LR.
  • Discuss and present deliverables with internal / external clients up to a senior level and be able to suggest alternative solutions where appropriate. Provide or implement those agreed deliverables even where there is no direct precedent.

What you bring

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work.
  • Extensive working knowledge of the principles of classification and statutory activity.
  • Evidence of understanding complex subjects and providing clear interpretations
  • Demonstrable evidence of communicating effectively at different levels within organisations and to influence successfully and openly at all levels within LR and externally
  • A proactive approach to problem solving with the ability to get the job done
  • As part of an international organization, candidate will have good proficiency in the English language. This role requires work authorization for the respective countries approved for hiring (i.e., India, Philippines, Mozambique, Malaysia, Greece and Poland).
