Staff

Teaching staff ensure good communication with parents, including the writing of reports; work together to create and deliver excellent schemes of work; and fulfil cover and other duties both within and after the school day.

Job Description

Position: KS2 and KS3 English Teacher

Contract: Permanent, 0.6 FTE Part-Time Contract Responsible to: Deputy Head Academic

Hours: The role will be delivered across four days per week. The current postholder works all day on Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday morning and Thursday morning. We anticipate a similar working pattern for the successful candidate, although there may be some flexibility regarding days and hours

Job Overview:

English is taught by class teachers in the lower parts of the School and by specialist subject teachers in Years 6–8. Teachers work collaboratively to ensure pupils receive an outstanding education through excellent teaching, effective pedagogy and strong professional teamwork.

Responsibilities and Key Duties:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Foster a love of English, reading and literature across Key Stages 2 and 3.

Prepare senior pupils effectively for entry to their chosen senior schools, including Common Entrance, 11+ and scholarship pathways where appropriate.

Deliver engaging, inspiring and inclusive lessons that challenge and support pupils to achieve their full potential.

Create stimulating and purposeful learning environments that encourage curiosity, independence and academic progress.

Work closely with the Head of Department to review, develop and maintain relevant schemes of work.

Keep abreast of developments within English teaching and learning, maintaining professional links with relevant associations, examination boards and schools.

Contribute to departmental discussions regarding curriculum development, syllabuses and schemes of work.

Participate in the setting, marking and moderation of internal assessments and examinations.

Promote effective and innovative teaching and learning strategies, including the creative use of resources and educational technologies.

Monitor, assess, record and report on pupils’ progress in accordance with School policies.

Maintain high standards of behaviour, safeguarding, health and safety, promoting the School’s values and expectations both in and beyond the classroom.

Keep appropriate lesson plans, records and assessment data.

Work closely with the SENCo to implement appropriate stretch and support interventions, ensuring pupils with additional learning needs make strong progress.

Build effective professional relationships with colleagues and liaise collaboratively across departments as required.

Contribute to the School’s weekly duty rota.

Take an active role in the extra-curricular life of the School and contribute positively to the wider pupil experience.

Demonstrate professionalism, discretion and respect for the confidential and trusted nature of the role.

Essential Person Specification:

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.

Experience of teaching English at Key Stage 2 and/or Key Stage 3.

A flexible and adaptable approach to teaching and school life.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

A genuine enthusiasm for working with children and supporting their development.

The ability to establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with pupils, parents and colleagues.

A positive and proactive approach to maintaining a purposeful and engaging learning environment.

Desirable Person Specification:

It would be advantageous for candidates to have:

Experience of teaching in an independent preparatory school setting.

Experience of preparing pupils for Common Entrance, 11+ assessments and scholarship examinations.

A full driving licence and willingness to drive a school minibus.

A good sense of humour and a positive, collegial approach to school life.

Conditional Offers to successful candidates

Any offer to a successful candidate will be conditional upon:

Where the successful candidate has worked or been resident overseas in the previous five years, such checks and confirmations as the school may require in accordance with statutory guidance

Satisfactory completion of the probationary period
