Junior Dean (Two Posts)
Description
New College seeks to appoint two graduate students of the University as Junior Deans on a fixed-term contract from 1 October 2026 to 31 July 2027, eligible for renewal, subject to qualifying conditions.
New College has four Junior Deans who support the Dean, the Assistant Dean, and the Porters in maintaining security and good order within the College; they may be called upon to act in a number of capacities within the College but are particularly required to participate in a duty rota that operates between 0th week and 9th week inclusive of each term. The duty rota requires the Junior Dean to be on call for at least 36 hours per week*.
The Junior Deans play a key role in assisting the Porters, and they are expected to react promptly but sensitively to any unacceptable behaviour. The Junior Deans are not encouraged to be involved in pastoral affairs relating to Junior Members; these are the responsibility of the College’s pastoral team.
The Junior Deans are required to reside in College, free of charge. The accommodation will be made available from 1st September 2026 to 31st August 2027 and is suitable for single occupancy only. A stipend of (currently) £2,053 is paid in monthly instalments (October to July) to supplement their other sources of income. Junior Deans have full SCR dining rights (lunch and dinner); they also have Rights of Commons entitling them to free meals in Hall. Successful applicants who are not members of New College would be expected to migrate.
Junior Deans are required to undergo a DBS check and the Postholder may be asked to undertake first aid training and fire safety training.
A full curriculum vitae and a covering letter outlining the applicant's skills relevant to the post should be submitted online by 11:59pm on Wednesday 20th May. Please note that only applications submitted via the online portal will be considered.
Applicants should ask two referees, one of whom should be their Graduate Studies Supervisor, to write to Mrs Jacqui Julier, Secretary to the Dean, New College, Oxford OX1 3BN, (01865) 279552 (Jacqui.julier@new.ox.ac.uk) by the same date above. It is expected that interviews will be held during 7th Week of Trinity Term.
Further particulars can be found here.
The position may be discussed with the Dean by email: michael.burden@new.ox.ac.uk, or with any of the current Junior Deans - https://www.new.ox.ac.uk/decanal-team.
* For those with visa restrictions, only the actual hours worked over this period will count towards the stated 20 hours per week maximum.
