Join Our Team: ICA/SCADA Engineer Opportunity
The job holder will be part of a team of ICA/SCADA Engineers, providing specialist technical expertise to manage significant infrastructure risks. They will contribute to both new infrastructure projects and the ongoing support of existing control systems, developing and delivering robust software solutions that meet business requirements. In doing so, they will ensure the effective operation of the Trust’s SCADA systems and MEICA assets, safeguarding reliability, compliance, and long-term performance.

Working Hours & Location
This role follows 37 hours, Monday to Friday working pattern. The vacancy will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces as and when required. Regular travel across our network will be required. See here: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/canals-and-rivers
Relevant Hubs: Leeds, Ellesmere Port, Burnley, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Gloucester.
A valid UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential.
Role Overview
In our ICA/SCADA teams are at the heart of how we keep 2,000 miles of waterways flowing safely and reliably. Using a bespoke, in house MEICA SCADA system, we monitor and manage water levels, flows, and critical assets across more than 600 remote monitoring stations — ensuring pumps, sluices, locks, and bridges operate exactly as they should.
These teams are pioneers in applying smart, future ready technology across challenging and remote locations. Their work keeps our automated structures running smoothly, provides real time insight into network conditions, and helps ensure our canals remain safe, resilient, and open for the millions who use and enjoy them
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert ICA and SCADA software engineering support, offering authoritative technical advice to ensure the safe and effective operation of Trust assets.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and enhance control system software through robust fault‑finding and corrective engineering.
- Work hands‑on with PLCs, switchgear, and associated control technologies to ensure reliable performance and seamless integration across systems.
- Deliver responsive operational support and specialist technical solutions to Waterways teams and other internal stakeholders.
- Lead the full software lifecycle — from specification and code development through configuration, testing, commissioning, and long‑term system support.
- Maintain high‑quality data, documentation, and configuration records for Trust control software, ensuring accuracy and compliance with defined standards.
- Produce clear technical documentation and contribute to the technical management of MEICA projects, ensuring efficient and effective engineering outcomes.
- Apply professional engineering judgement to recommend sound technical approaches and solutions.
- Review, verify, and validate electrical wiring schematics to support safe and accurate implementation.
- Champion compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements across all design and engineering activities.
- Maintain accurate project files, records, and configuration information throughout delivery.
- Proactively manage personal professional development to support ongoing technical growth and competence.
- Lead, mentor, and develop ICA Technicians and junior colleagues, helping to build capability and strengthen team performance.
About You
We welcome applicants with a strong foundation in IT, Electrical or Control Engineering, and hands‑on experience with SCADA systems, PLCs, RTUs and telemetry technologies. You’ll be confident developing and testing PLC logic, bring a clear and safety‑focused approach, and work well both independently and within multidisciplinary teams. You communicate effectively, support colleagues across the organisation, and are committed to ongoing professional development.
Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills
- Chartered or Incorporated professional (or equivalent), with membership of a relevant body such as IET or BCS.
- Degree, HND, or equivalent qualification in IT, Electrical, or Control Engineering.
- Experience working with telemetry systems, PLCs, RTUs, industrial communications, and related technologies.
- Skilled in developing, testing, and delivering PLC logic and control code, ideally using Mitsubishi platforms (training can be provided).
- Practical experience configuring, integrating, and maintaining SCADA systems.
General Skills
- Strong commitment to continuing professional development (CPD).
- Ability to provide effective technical support across multiple business functions.
- Solid understanding of health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Able to work independently as well as collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly to a range of stakeholders.
