UWC Mostar was and is the first UWC with the explicit aim to contribute to the reconstruction of a post-conflict society, and also the first to be housed within an existing national school. The college is based within the striking Austro-Hungarian building of Gimnazija Mostar. Our students are secondary school students belonging to all ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as students from the nearby region and further abroad, all of whom live, study, and serve the community together. UWC Mostar enriches the UWC movement by adding its unique aim: “To equip the next generations of young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the knowledge, skills, leadership qualities and international values, necessary to bridge the still existing ethnic divisions and move their country into the 21st century.”

UWC Mostar is looking for an experienced and committed IBDP Spanish B and ab initio teacher.

Responsibilities

Teachers Responsibilities

  • Teaches the subject(s) at the Higher and Standard Level according to the IB Diploma Programme and is available for ad hoc teaching duties (e.g., teaching Theory of Knowledge – TOK) under the guidance and instructions of the Director of Learning and Head of Department.
  • Contributes to UWC Mostar’s Learning Programme, which includes but is not limited to Balkan Studies and Skill Building Programme, in collaboration with the respective facilitators.
  • Supervises Extended Essays (EEs) in their subject and related fields.
  • Supports students in the process of applying to universities and other programmes, by writing recommendation letters, giving advice and providing relevant guidance, among others.
  • Provides holistic pastoral care as a tutor for a group of students, providing them with guidance and support in all aspects of student life, including academics, co-curricular activities, attendance and residential life, amongst others.
  • Performs residential duties and contributes to the pastoral care of students, as required and specified by the Head of College.
  • Actively participates in the CAS programme, leading and supervising one or more community service, sports and outdoors, or creativity and artistic activities.
  • Organises and supervises a Project Week according to the policies and decisions made by the College.
  • Organises and participates in co-curricular and outreach activities aimed at building and strengthening the College’s community, which contributes to the UWC experience and the achievement of the College’s mission.
  • Contributes towards the general programme of teacher professional development in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which constitutes an important part of the aims of UWC Mostar.
  • Participates in staff meetings, meetings with students, meetings with parents, and other meetings as needed.
  • Is prepared to carry out management responsibilities, which the Head may reasonably request to ensure the efficient administration of the College and the IB Diploma programme.
  • Supports the work of the College in any way that the Head of College considers an active contribution can be helpful.
  • Devotes the whole of the working time to the affairs of the College and its Governing Board, and refrains from undertaking any activities that could interfere with them.

Tutor responsibilities

  • All student-facing roles (e.g., teachers and house parents) perform the role of Tutor to a group of students (4 or 5 for a part-time staff member and 7 to 10 for a full-time staff member) referred to as Tutees. In this role, the Tutor performs a Duty of Care and assumes the following responsibilities:
    • Demonstrates a genuine interest in their Tutees' well-being.
    • Is a reassuring adult presence by developing and maintaining a relationship of trust and care with the assigned Tutees.
    • Is an academic, co-curricular, socio-emotional, and residential advisor to the Tutee.
    • Meets with the Tutees during each scheduled meeting and individually as required.
    • Communicates with relevant stakeholders to support the Tutee’s performance and wellbeing: parents, Senior Tutors, IB Coordinator, Learning Support Supervisor, members of the
    • Leadership Team (LT) responsible for the particular area of concern, school administration, psychological counsellors, and nurses as needed.
    • Checks and updates the attendance for: tutor meetings, College assemblies, Global Awareness sessions, any other activities where Tutor Group attendance is required to be taken.
    • Maintains a record of the Tutee’s performance in all areas and uses this to write Tutor Reports on ManageBac each term.
    • Works with the Tutees in upholding the Code of Conduct and partners with the Well-being Team in disciplinary procedures regarding transgressions of the Code of Conduct by the Tutees.
    • Supports the Tutee in any disciplinary procedures and restorative actions.
    • Performs a duty of care, especially related to the Tutee’s well-being. Brings to the notice of the respective Senior Tutor, the Counsellor, the Nurse, the House Parent, or the Director of Student Well-being, any relevant information required to ensure the student's well-being while keeping the student's safety and the need for confidentiality in mind.
    • Supports individual Tutees by encouraging healthy and sustainable habits and personal goals.
    • Performs other duties as required by the Head of College and the Director of the respective department.
    • Teachers are accountable to their respective Heads of the Department and the Director of Learning.

Skills and preferred experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree (minimum 4 years) in the respective subject or related field (240 ECTS).
  • Proven fluency in English with strong oral and written communication skills.
  • IT skills: ability to use and leverage technology for the teaching and learning process.
  • A minimum of 1 (one) year of relevant work experience.

  • Qualifications that would be an advantage include prior work experience at United World Colleges or IB schools and professional teaching qualifications.
