UWC Costa Rica is looking for an experienced and committed English Teacher, reporting to the Academic Director.

UWC Costa Rica is a non-profit international boarding school offering a two-year pre-university programme leading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Guided by the UWC mission of making education a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future, the school fosters global citizenship, intercultural understanding, and service to humanity and the planet.

The school hosts approximately 200 students from more than 70 countries, creating a highly diverse and multicultural learning environment. UWC Costa Rica seeks a qualified and passionate IB English A (Literature and Language & Literature) Teacher for the 2026–2027 academic year under a minimum two-year contract.

The teacher will deliver high-quality instruction aligned with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme while contributing actively to the residential and co-curricular life of the school. The role supports students’ intellectual, social, and ethical development within a diverse international boarding environment.

The successful candidate will foster inclusive learning spaces, promote intercultural dialogue, and integrate sustainability and experiential learning into teaching practices, while actively supporting the UWC mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver IB English A (Literature and Language & Literature) lessons aligned with IB curriculum standards and best teaching practices.
  • Create intellectually stimulating and inclusive classroom environments that reflect UWC values.
  • Assess student learning and provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Develop unit plans and assessments according to IB requirements.
  • Supervise Extended Essays within the subject area.
  • Submit grades, reports, and internal assessments within established deadlines.
  • Provide tutorial support and academic mentoring to students.
  • Lead a mentoring group of students and support their academic and personal development.
  • Participate in residential life duties, including weekend supervision.
  • Contribute to CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) and co-curricular programmes.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, field trips, and thematic educational activities.
  • Promote community building and student wellbeing while adhering to safeguarding and institutional policies.

Skills and preferred experience

  • Degree in English Literature, Education, or a related field.
  • Recognised teaching qualification and valid teaching certification.
  • Minimum two years of teaching experience; IB Diploma Programme experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of IB philosophy and assessment practices.
  • Fluency in English; Spanish proficiency or willingness to learn is desirable.
  • Cross-cultural awareness and ability to work in diverse international environments.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Experience with experiential or nature-based education is an advantage.
  • Commitment to sustainability and service learning.
  • Ability to engage actively in residential school life and co-curricular programming.
  • Demonstrated empathy, adaptability, and student-centered teaching approach.
