Job Title: House Master / House Mistress Line Manager: Head of Boarding The British house boarding system is an important link to practice the mission of holistic education, which can cultivate students' self-management ability, independent ability, cooperation ability and leadership. Sedbergh School Fuzhou adopts mixed-age boarding, students of different grades and classes live together, get together like family and gain friendship. Boarding pastoral teachers team establishes a reliable relationship with students, and provide timely help and guidance in academic and life; boarding activities, including sports activities, art performances, team competition, etc., to provide a full stage for each child's personality and talent. Role Overview The House Master/Mistress is a pivotal leadership role within the school, responsible for creating a nurturing, inclusive, and high-achieving boarding community. They have overall accountability for the welfare, academic progress, personal development, and discipline of all students in their house. As the students' primary point of contact and an in-loco-parentis figure, the House Master/Mistress fosters a supportive and structured home environment where every child feels safe, happy, and empowered to thrive. At this stage, Sedbergh School Fuzhou is looking for the candidates with a full-time, residential position requiring a visible and engaged presence within the Middle School Boys’ House (G6 - G8), and Upper Senior School Boys’ House and Girls’ House (G9 - G12). 【Key Responsibilities】 1. Pastoral Care & Welfare - Overall Responsibility: Take ultimate responsibility for the physical, emotional, and social wellbeing of all students in the house. - Safeguarding: Champion a culture of safety, ensuring the highest standards of child protection and safeguarding are embedded in all aspects of house life. Liaise with the designated safeguarding lead as necessary. - Student Support: Be a visible and approachable presence, proactively building strong, trusting relationships with each student to understand their individual character, needs, and any personal, medical, or family circumstances. - Health & Safety: Working in close partnership with the Matron and facilities team, oversee the health and safety of the house. This includes conducting regular risk assessments, completing safety checks, and organizing fire practices in line with the National Minimum Standards (NMS). 1 2. Academic & Personal Development - Academic Oversight: Monitor and support the academic progress of every student in the house. Liaise regularly with academic staff, tutors, and boarding staff to ensure students are fulfilling their potential and to coordinate additional support where needed. - Progress Tracking: Utilize school systems (e.g., Xiaobao, DingTalk and Teams) to track pupil progress, ensuring academic and pastoral information is effectively coordinated and shared with relevant colleagues. - Holistic Formation: Encourage students to develop their social, co-curricular, and personal potential, guiding them to become well-rounded individuals. 3. Leadership & Team Management - Team Leadership: Lead, manage, and motivate the house team, which includes an Assistant House Master/Mistress, Residential Tutors, Matron, and other house staff. Conduct regular house team meetings to ensure clear communication and coordinated care. - Staff Development: Support the professional development of team members, serving as a training ground for future leadership. 4. Operations, Administration & Discipline - House Management: Oversee the day-to-day running and smooth operation of the boarding house, including the upkeep of facilities, management of the house budget, and adherence to school policies. - Discipline & Standards: In collaboration with tutors and the house team, maintain high standards of student conduct, behavior, tidiness, and appearance (including uniform), fostering a sense of pride and responsibility. - Reporting: Write regular, high-quality reports on student progress and wellbeing. 5. Communication & Community - Parent Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for parents and guardians, building strong partnerships through regular communication, and parent meetings to discuss student progress and boarding life. - House Culture: Promote a strong sense of community and house identity by organizing and encouraging participation in house activities, competitions, and social events, such as House Cup, Wilson Run, etc,. - Wider School Contribution: Actively contribute to the broader life of the school by participating in whole-school events, assemblies, and marketing activities, such as open days and admissions events, to help promote the school's boarding ethos. 2 6. Teaching & Co-Curricular Duties - Teaching: Fulfill a teaching timetable (typically a reduced load) in an agreed subject area, delivering engaging and challenging lessons . - Co-Curricular Engagement: Play a full and active role in the school's co-curricular programme, which may include coaching sport, leading clubs, or participating in weekend activities 7. General - To undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Boarding or the Head of Section. 【Person Specification】 1. Proven experience in a pastoral leadership role within a boarding school environment; 2. Experience living and working in a residential setting with children; 3. A clear and demonstrable passion for the wellbeing and holistic development of young people; 4. Strong leadership, team management, and delegation skills; 5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues; 6. Outstanding organizational and administrative skills, with high emotional intelligence and resilience; 7. A flexible, energetic, and proactive approach, with a visible commitment to all aspects of boarding school life, including weekends; 8. In-depth knowledge of current safeguarding practices and adolescent issues; 9. Experience with or a proactive approach to the admissions process (e.g., conducting interviews, attending open days); 10.
