About us
The Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3) is a professional membership organisation and registered charity, governed by a Royal Charter. With more than 150 years of history, we bring together a diverse global community working across the materials, minerals and mining sectors.
We connect disciplines through 22 Technical Communities and support clear pathways to professional registration, including chartership. Our members benefit from expert-led content, mentoring and a collaborative professional network. As a leading voice for sustainability and circularity across the materials cycle, we support our community to make a lasting impact, within their field and beyond. IOM3 is a professional home for materials, minerals and mining.
Role: Head of Marketing & Communications
The Head of Marketing & Communications is a key role at IOM3, responsible for leading and delivering the organisation’s marketing and communications strategy. Working closely with internal teams, the role brings together activity across brand, communications, marketing and digital channels to increase visibility, strengthen engagement with members and customers and support revenue growth.
The position plays an important part in raising the profile of IOM3 across professional, industrial and academic communities as well as with wider audiences. It is a highly influential role with real ownership and the opportunity to make a lasting impact.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead delivery of the IOM3 marketing and communications strategy, embedding it across campaigns, communications and volunteer engagement to strengthen visibility, deepen engagement and support organisational growth. Ensure our identity reflects our new vision and mission and builds trust across all channels.
- Oversee the planning and delivery of multi-channel campaigns to grow membership and engage new audiences.
- Lead media and press activity, ensuring IOM3 voice is represented across specialist and national media, with a focus on raising the profile of our policy and influence work. Manage media partnerships and co-sponsorship activity.
- Work with teams to keep messaging clear, consistent and aligned. Support shared campaigns by working closely with colleagues and volunteers across our 22 technical communities and wider network.
- Engage with IOM3 members and stakeholders at events, conferences and trade shows, and collaborate with regulatory bodies, professional engineering institutes, partners and external agencies.
- Manage and support the Communications Manager and Website Manager, enabling them to deliver high-quality content, develop digital channels and improve member and volunteer engagement.
- Oversee brand governance, campaign planning and performance measurement, setting clear success metrics and using insight to drive improvement. Work closely with the Senior Team to ensure IOM3 brand, voice and profile support wider strategic goals.
- Ensure all communications are clear and consistent, supporting teams to apply IOM3 tone of voice and visual identity across all channels, and advising on reputational risk and reactive communications.
Person specification:
- Experience leading marketing and communications strategy, delivering audience-focused campaigns and managing activity across multiple channels.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong understanding of tone, narrative, audience segmentation and brand.
- Strong strategic thinking, with the ability to translate organisational goals into clear campaigns and measurable outcomes, while managing multiple projects to tight deadlines.
- Experience working with senior leadership, volunteers and stakeholders, aligning messaging across teams and supporting organisational priorities.
- Good knowledge of digital marketing, content, CRM systems and analytics, with confidence using data and insight to improve performance.
- Understanding of professional membership organisations (desirable).
