The Gym Worker plays a vital role in supporting the safe, welcoming, and engaging delivery of gym and fitness provision at The Way Youth Zone. Working as part of the sports and youth work team, the role focuses on supervising sessions, encouraging participation, promoting positive health and wellbeing, and helping young people access fitness opportunities in a safe and inclusive environment.
Embedded within The Way Youth Zone’s youth-led approach, the role supports young people to build confidence, develop healthy habits, and achieve personal goals through physical activity. Gym Workers act as positive role models and ambassadors for The Way, ensuring young people feel welcomed, supported, and motivated throughout their participation.

Relationship Building & Engagement
• Build positive, trusted relationships with young people using the gym and fitness provision.
• Act as a visible, approachable presence during sessions, encouraging participation and positive engagement.
• Support young people to develop confidence and make the most of the opportunities available.
Gym Session Delivery & Participation
• Support the delivery of safe, engaging, and inclusive gym sessions.
• Assist with gym inductions and promote safe use of equipment.
• Encourage young people to participate in physical activity and work towards personal fitness goals.
Inclusion, Safeguarding & Wellbeing
• Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion across all gym activity.
• Always uphold safeguarding responsibilities, acting promptly on any welfare concerns.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries while offering consistent, supportive engagement.
Health, Safety & Environment
• Monitor the safe use of gym equipment and facilities.
• Report any equipment faults, incidents, accidents, or concerns in line with organisational procedures.
• Support the maintenance of a clean, safe, and welcoming gym environment.

Partnership & Representation
• Work collaboratively with Youth Zone staff, volunteers, and colleagues to support effective delivery.
• Represent The Way Youth Zone positively, promoting its values and opportunities.
Recording, Reflection & Development
• Complete registers and basic recording as required.
• Reflect on practice and contribute to continuous improvement.
• Participate in training, supervision, and professional development opportunities.
Essential
• Recognized gym / fitness qualification (e.g. Level 2 Gym Instructor or equivalent).
• Experience delivering gym or fitness activities in a supervised environment.
• Experience working with children and young people.
• Understanding of health and safety within a gym setting.
• Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and during school holidays.
• Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain one).
• Recognized gym / fitness qualification (e.g. Level 2 Gym Instructor or equivalent).
• Experience delivering gym or fitness activities in a supervised environment.
• Experience working with children and young people.
• Understanding of health and safety within a gym setting.
