Our team of geriatricians serves a population of approximately 930,000 across Vancouver Island, working within a strong collegial network of interdisciplinary care.
Victoria
In Victoria, the Patient Care Centre is a state-of-the-art facility designed with an elder-friendly approach to meet the unique needs of seniors. The geriatric service provides both inpatient and outpatient consultation, with physicians rotating through all aspects of specialized geriatric care. You will work alongside dedicated interdisciplinary teams in a highly supportive environment. There are no on-call duties and remuneration is provided through an attractive clinical service contract.
Cowichan Valley (Duncan)
The Cowichan Valley offers the opportunity to practice in a growing community with exciting developments underway. The new Cowichan District Hospital, opening in 2027, will expand services to 204 beds with opportunities to contribute to the design of seniors’ care. Physicians work as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team alongside geriatric psychiatry, family physicians and other specialists, with strong connections to Home and Community Care. The role includes inpatient consultation up to two days per week and outpatient services supported by a growing team including nursing and allied health professionals.
Nanaimo
Nanaimo, Vancouver Island’s second largest city, offers a dynamic and evolving environment for geriatric care. Physicians in Nanaimo are part of a broader integrated system that includes access to acute and rehabilitation programs across the Island.There are strong opportunities for collaboration with geriatric psychiatry through a well-established Seniors Mental Health program. This includes working alongside multidisciplinary teams providing consultation across acute inpatient, outpatient and residential care settings. Physicians may also have the opportunity to expand their scope through outreach programs supporting rural and remote communities, including meaningful work with First Nations populations.Teaching opportunities are available through the Island Medical Program, along with involvement in innovative initiatives such as the Island-wide Dementia Strategy.

Comox Valley
The Comox Valley offers a unique blend of coastal and mountain living paired with a supportive medical community. Physicians provide geriatric consultation services across inpatient and outpatient settings, working within interdisciplinary teams to support seniors throughout their care journey.
This region is ideal for those seeking a balance of rewarding clinical work and an active outdoor lifestyle.
Campbell River
The North Island Hospital in Campbell River, built in 2017, is a modern facility with an elder-friendly design. The geriatric service supports a robust clinical program including inpatient and outpatient consultation and follow-up. Physicians work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including a local geriatric psychiatrist. There are no on-call duties and compensation is provided through a clinical service contract.
Academic Opportunities
Island Health’s Division of Geriatrics is affiliated with the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the Island Medical Program. Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is encouraged and UBC faculty appointments may be available.
