The Light Cavalry Honourable Artillery Company General Manager, Light Cavalry Stables Flemish Farm, Windsor 1 Background 1.1 The Honourable Artillery Company The Honourable Artillery Company was established by Royal Charter on 25th August 1537. Since the 17th century the Company has also been described as a Regiment, and since 1964 has been registered as a charity (charity no 208443). Its charitable purpose, in line with its original charter, is "for military exercise and training and for the better defence of the realm". The HAC has occupied Artillery Garden since 1641 and Armoury House, its Headquarters and Mess, was built in 1734. The HAC comprises the Regiment (part of the Army Reserve) and a membership of 2,500 active and veteran personnel. It also runs two CCF contingents, a Special Constabulary Detachment and ceremonial sub-units. The Light Cavalry is one of these ceremonial units and is described below. 1.2 The Light Cavalry Formed in 1861, the HAC's original Light Cavalry Troop was absorbed into a new horse artillery battery in 1891. In 1979, its spirit was re-ignited within the HAC's Saddle Club to form the new Light Cavalry ceremonial unit that exists today. Membership of the Light Cavalry is open to all ranks of any Service. The Light Cavalry's most prominent event of the year is providing the Lady Mayoress with a travelling escort at the Lord Mayor's Show in London; it also provides a dismounted carpet guard to the Lord Mayor's coach at the entrance to the Law Courts. Additional ceremonial duties have included providing guards 1 at polo matches at Smith's Lawn, Windsor, during the summer and participating in other parades in London and elsewhere. The Light Cavalry's horses are maintained at Flemish Farm on the edge of Windsor Great Park. The Light Cavalry's normal establishment is twelve horses, and these are augmented for ceremonial and military equitation activities by a small number of horses owned by members. 1.3 Flemish Farm The Light Cavalry's Stables at Flemish Farm includes twelve stables, a tack room, stores, an office, and a covered arena. While the 20m by 40m covered arena, the office and secure storage area were purchased by the HAC, the remaining facilities belong to The Crown Estate. There is limited access to turnout nearby. The primary purpose of the operation at Flemish Farm is to provide suitable trained horses for the Light Cavalry's military equitation and ceremonial duties. To this end, the horses need to be well cared for, fit, adaptable, and suitably trained. This calls for year-round care as well as exercise and training by Supporting Riders who in turn provide the bulk of the revenue underpinning the viability of the Stables. 2 Local organisations, including schools and other Armed Forces groups, also make use of Light Cavalry instructors and facilities. Members of the Light Cavalry have taken part in a variety of equestrian competitive activities, both individually and in teams, including cross-country, skill- at-arms and show jumping. The Light Cavalry has a reputation for the highest standards of horse welfare, safety, presentation, and behaviour in all that it does. This reputation must be carefully guarded and must not be put at risk. In 2004, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II presented the Light Cavalry with a Royal Warrant. Though a privately funded, volunteer unit the Light Cavalry is involved in regular high profile public appearances and is seen in the same context as the Household Cavalry and the King's Troop. Therefore, the Light Cavalry's operation, whether in Windsor Great Park, or on a wider stage, must strive to always maintain the highest standards. 3 2 Job Description 2.1 Job Title: General Manager Employed by: The Honourable Artillery Company Reporting to: The Board of the Light Cavalry 2.2 Job Purpose The holder of this position will lead a team of grooms, managing all aspects of the Light Cavalry's Stables at Flemish Farm to ensure a safe, efficient and commercially viable operation.
