Reports to: Grounds Supervisor
Based: North East Surrey Crematorium SM4 4NU
Salary: £28887.15
Contract: Permanent, Full Time
Work Arrangement: 40 hours per week, Onsite
DBS: Basic
Role Overview:
The Bereavement Team are a small team of professionals based at Putney Vale or North East Surrey. The team manages two crematoria, three busy cemeteries and two closed cemeteries. The team pride themselves o their work showing professionalism, empathy and compassion through everything they do, positively supporting the community in times of need.
Main Duties/Responsibilities:
- Reports to the Grounds supervisor for horticultural and general duties.
- Carries out grass cutting, weeding, lawn care, tree planting, rose and shrub care and the planting of seasonal bedding in accordance with the seasonal schedules.
- Prepares graves and vaults for the interment of cremated remains as necessary.
- Regular upkeep and cleaning of memorial tablets and their surrounding areas.
- Places or remove memorial plaques in accordance with requests from the administration team.
- Ensures paths are clear of debris, sweeping through when necessary.
- Carries out light maintenance duties and maintains equipment and reports defects to the relevant office.
- Assist at the annual memorial service and other events.
- Assists members of the public with enquiries relating to memorials and referring them to the office.
- Adheres to Enable Leisure & Culture’s Equal Opportunities policies with respect to the staff and the public.
- Complies with Health and Safety legislation, to ensure safe working practices of all staff, public and contractors in his/her working environment, in accordance with Enable Leisure & Culture’s safety arrangements, policies and codes.
- Be aware of any sensitive information held by your section and ensure adherence to Enable Leisure & Culture’s information security policies.
- To be fully aware of and understand the duties and responsibilities arising from the Children Act 2004 and Working Together in relation to the child protection and safeguarding children and young people as this applies to your role within Enable Leisure & Culture. To also be fully aware of the principles of safeguarding as they apply to vulnerable adults in relation to your work role. To ensure that your line manager is made aware and kept fully informed of any concerns which you may have in relation to safeguarding and/or child protection.
- Undertakes other related duties commensurate with the grade as required by the Bereavement Services Manager
Skills and Experience:
- Experience of horticultural work in a similar setting or a similar size environment
- A sound knowledge of grass and plants, particularly rose care
- Experience of using and maintaining related equipment such as lawn mowers, strimmers, leaf blowers and the like
- Experience in dealing with members of the public and an understanding of grief
- Experience of following instructions and reporting back that works are completed
- Ability to carry out light maintenance tasks such as painting and decorating, basic plumbing and pressure washing
- To communicate effectively with the public, colleagues and contractors
- Ability to work alone and organise daily and weekly activities with minimal supervision
- A general understanding of safeguarding vulnerable adults and young people, with a willingness to attend training as required.
- Holds a clean Valid UK Drivers licence and owns a vehicle suitable for occasional work use.
