HOPE worldwide UK Fundraising Trustee Role Description HOPE worldwide has the mission to help people to overcome homelessness and poverty through compassionate service. Our vision is a world where everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their God-given potential. We are seeking to add someone who brings one or more of the following to our board of trustees: • Experience of fundraising, income generation and donor stewardship Strategic understanding of fundraising across multiple income streams • • Knowledge of relevant legal guidelines including data protection, Gift Aid, fundraising law, and other relevant compliance issues. Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that HOPE worldwide UK achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that HOPE worldwide UK has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the Senior Management Team (SMT) to enable HOPE worldwide UK to grow and thrive. Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals. Specific Responsibilities – Fundraising Oversight • Provide strategic oversight of the charity’s fundraising strategy • Contribute to the development of compelling cases for support and clear impact reporting • Use personal insight, networks or experience to open doors where appropriate • • • Ensure fundraising activity is ethical, legal and aligned with Charity Commission and Fundraising Support long-term income sustainability and resilience Support and challenge senior staff on fundraising plans, performance, KPIs and risk Regulator guidance What we are looking for: Essential As a Christ-centred charity, we are looking for faithful followers of Jesus Christ willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking and experience on our board. Desirable: • Experience of fundraising within a faith-based or international development context – particularly in Asia and/or Africa • Experience of building and delivering a fundraising strategy • Experience of leading a fundraising department • Experience of fundraising for UK-based social action, homelessness, children’s services, or community programmes. • Experience of community or challenge event fundraising. • Experience of engaging younger supporters or developing new audiences. • Familiarity with digital fundraising and online giving platforms. Transferable skills from other sectors are warmly welcomed. General Trustee Duties: • Support and provide advice on HOPE worldwide UK’s purpose, vision, goals and activities. • Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation. • Oversee HOPE worldwide UK’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress. • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation. • Ensure key risks are identified, monitored and controlled effectively. • Review and approve the annual financial statements. • Provide support and challenge to the CEO and SMT in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs. • Keep abreast of changes in HOPE worldwide UK’s operating environment. • Contribute to reviews of HOPE worldwide UK’s own governance. Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions. • Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect HOPE worldwide UK’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests. • Contribute to the broader promotion of HOPE worldwide UK’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts. There will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, participating in committees, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise. Terms of appointment Terms of office • Trustees are appointed for a three-year term, renewal for two further terms to a maximum of nine years. • This is a voluntary position, and there is no pay, but reasonable expenses may be paid. Time commitment • Attend five board meetings annually. Meetings are held remotely by video conference. • Attend one annual in person strategy day. This has historically been held in London. • Additional time to provide support for committees that the trustee has been appointed to. Committee membership Every trustee has opportunities to contribute to board committees or working groups. The Fundraising and Communications Trustee will lead the Fundraising & Communications Committee. Participation in other committees—such as Finance, Audit & Risk; Safeguarding; HR Policy & Pay; or Trustee Nominations & Governance—is optional, depending on capacity and interest.
