Job Title: Functional Skills Subject Lead

Reporting to: Head of Education
Grade/Salary: £37,000 - £40,000
Hours: 35 hours per week (negotiable for the right candidate)
Contract: Permanent 42 weeks per year (Term Time + 3 additional weeks) (negotiable)

Probationary Period: 6-month probationary period
Location: Main Road Nurseries, Stanwell Moor Road, TW19 6BS (Close to T5 Heathrow)

Background to the Role

Green Corridor is a dynamic UK registered Charity, working to improve the lives of 16-25 year olds
with Special Educational Needs (SEN) through our various pathways and functional skills
programmes. We run a section 41 Post-16 provision with about 50 learners on roll.

Summary of the Role

Our successful charity runs pathways which focus on employability and skills for every day living
to help young people, with SEN and learning disabilities to gain confidence and social support,
alongside nationally recognised qualifications.

Green Corridor requires the skills of an experienced educator to oversee the Functional skills of
learners at Green Corridor, including English, Maths and Digital skills. The Functional Skills Lead will
be responsible for overseeing the functional skills baseline assessments, embedding functional
skills throughout the provision, Examination preparation and Overseeing the correct examination
processes assessing entry level examinations and completing Speaking, listening and
communication assessments. The role will involve working with Foundation and Vocational Leads
and developing Tutors within the post entry level qualifications. This will include observations of
Functional Skills Tutors and feedback.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the Role

Assessment, Recording and Reporting
•  Oversee the initial assessments and diagnostics process for all new learners.
•  To  contribute

to  decision  making  around  exemptions,  by  making  exemption

recommendations to senior leaders.

•  Support learners to make demonstrable progress in their Functional Skills knowledge.
•  To integrate functional skills across the provision, ensuring that it is embedded appropriately

within all lessons and parents/carers are able to reinforce learning at home.

•  Ensure the highest level of quality across functional skills provision.
•  Oversee the assessment process and diagnostics to monitor individual learners’ progression.
•  To  build  relationships  with  learners  and  fully  understand  their  needs,  in  and  outside  of  the

classroom.

•  To devise and implement schemes of work and individual learner plans
•  To  support  tutors  through  training  and  observations  to  further  enhance  the  quality  of

teaching, learning and assessment.

•  Working  with  our  Internal  Verifier  (IV)  to  ensure  that  documentation  and  assessments  are

undertaken to Centre and qualification standards.

•  To provide reports for Progress Reviews and Interim Reviews of learners and provide feedback

and on outcomes to the agreed time scale.

•  To  oversee  the  updating  and  maintaining  of  individual  learner  plans,  setting  and  reviewing
high quality destination focused SMART targets for all learners with regards to Functional Skills.
Including short and medium term plans and targets.

•  To Assess learners’ work accurately and to the required standard.
•  To have overall responsibility for the exam booking process, this includes:

o  To work with others to ensure the exam administration process is robust
o  Ensuring  the  person  booking  exams has  the correct information  in a  clear  and  timely

manner

o  To line up IV as appropriate
o  To book rooms and invigilators for exams
o  To work with others to book exams as appropriate.

•  To advise and co-operate with colleagues on the preparation of teaching materials, schemes

of work, methods of teaching and assessment.

•  Work with the Head of Education, Vocational Lead and Foundation Lead on integration of

functional skills in line with the needs of RARPA and the employability qualifications.
•  Oversee the consistency and curriculum for all learners with regards to functional skills.

Frontline Teaching
•  To  plan,  prepare  and  teach  schemes  of  work  to  national  standards  and  deliver  individually
targeted  lessons.  To complete  planning  documentation to  the time  schedule  agreed  by our
Head of Education.

•  To teach learners according to their individual needs, and to approved standards.
•  You  will  not  be  expected  to  deliver  full  time  teaching  hours,  but  will  be  responsible  for
teaching learners who are entered into entry level 1, entry level 2, entry level 3, level 1 and level
2 English and Maths exams,

•  To promote the embedding of Functional skills and British Values for all learners.
•  To tailor teaching to the differing levels of ability of individual learners in a cohort.

•  To be familiar with and work to all the organisation’s Policies and Procedures.
•  To work collaboratively with parents/carers to ensure a consistent approach to the delivery of

programmes including; behaviour management, communication, shared targets etc.

•  Ensure  risk  assessments  are  completed  for  activities  and  followed  on  site  to  ensure  that

learners and members of the community are safe at all times.

Professional Development
•  To participate in 30 hours CPD per year specific to the needs of learners and Green Corridor.
•  To keep your own individual Professional Development Plan up to date.

Cover
•  To  supervise,  and  so  far  as  it  is  practicable,  teach  any  learners  whose  tutor  is  not  available

due to absence or annual leave.

Other duties
•  The post holder will be required to undertake other appropriate activities related to achieving

the organisations objectives, as determined by the CEO.

Additional Information

•  Hours  are  09:00-16:30  (incl.  30  minute  unpaid  lunch  break)  Monday  –  Friday.  Working  from

home will need to be agreed in advance with your line manager.

•  Annual leave to be taken outside advertised term dates

Proven experience in quality record keeping

Experience  working  with  young  people  with  SEN,  in  particular

Proven  track  record  of  delivering  high-quality  Functional  Skills

lessons

Comprehensive  experience  of  Assessing  exams  for  Maths  and

English functional skills

Experience of taking multiple cohorts through the exams process
including conducting speaking  and  listening exams  from Entry 3

– Level 2

Experience  of  working  within  Further  education/  tutoring/  high
quality  teaching  with  a  variety  of  learners,  including  those  with

additional needs

Experience  of  coordinating  and  administration  of  the  exams

process

Comprehensive  experience  of  doing  initial  assessments  and

diagnostics (with BKSB – desirable)
