Freelance Technical Team: Technical Manager/Lighting Technician and Sound Engineer
Ransack Dance Company is recruiting an experienced Technical Manager/Lighting Technician and Sound Engineer for our Spring 2027 tour of Us and Them, a double-bill dance theatre production accompanied by live music. (Previously toured in 2023/24.)
Technical Manager and Lighting Designer Responsibilities include:
- Attend rehearsals at our base in Pontypridd to watch and learn the performance in order to create lighting plans/cue sheet.
- Create lighting plan/cue sheet for the show (using previous plans as guides and working with the Artistic Director to develop ideas)
- Work closely with our Director and Sound Engineer to organise and hire appropriate technical equipment for the tour.
- Devise technical rehearsal schedules and tech riders and liaise with in-house technical teams at venues regarding schedules and in-house equipment for the performances.
- Arrange risk assessments for tech rehearsals and performances.
- Organise transport of production set.
- Manage the technical team on tour (Sound Engineer and in-house technicians)
- Rig and focus lighting at venues.
- Manage the technical and dress rehearsals on tour.
- Light the performances on tour (as lighting technician)
Sound Engineer responsibilities include:
- Attending rehearsals at our base in Pontypridd to watch and learn the performance in order to create/learn sound rigs and sound plan/cue sheets.
- Working in collaboration with the Technical Manager/Lighting technician to ensure the success of technical elements relating to sound. This includes pre-recorded tracks and live music and use of headset radio mics for dancers to deliver live speech during the performance.
- Working closely with the musicians to ensure smooth and successful get-in/set up/sound checks during rehearsals and effective sound delivery during performances.
- Liaise with venues regarding in-house music equipment and set-up and ensure that the Technical Manager has information regarding any equipment the company needs to hire in.
- Support and manage/problem solve any problems that may arise regarding music tech when touring to different venues.
- Use of Q-lab during performances for backing tracks and managing levels and sound quality of live music and speech during performances.
Dates and Locations:
One day (8 hours) is allocated to planning meetings and visiting rehearsals at company base – YMa, Pontypridd, part time during last two weeks of January 2027 (to be arranged in accordance with availability and rehearsal schedules).
Production Week: Thursday 28th January attending rehearsals at YMa, Pontypridd.
Monday 1st February to Thursday 4th February (premiere performance) at Blackwood Miners’ Institute.
Tour dates (Spring 2027)
Each venue has one performance date. Some venues then have 2 days get-in/rehearsals and others one day get-in/rehearsals beforehand:
- Tuesday 16th to Thursday 18th February: Theatr Stiwt, Rhosllannerchrugog (near Wrexham)
- Tuesday 23rd February to Thursday 25th February: Theatr Soar, Merthyr
- Tuesday 2nd March to Thursday 4th March: Ffwrnes Theatre, Llanelli
- Monday 8th March to Tuesday 9th March: Malvern Theatres
- Wednesday 17th March to Thursday 18th March: Memo Arts Centre, Barry
Fee:
Technical Manager/Lighting Technician based on £750 per week (production week) and £225 day rate (tour days at theatres). Total contract: £3,900.
Sound Engineer based on £631 per week (production week) and £180 day rate (tour days at theatres). Total contract: £3,151.
Travel expenses, accommodation and per diems are also provided for tour venues.

Potential additional project autumn 2026: We are also planning to produce and premiere a new production in Autumn 2026 (funding dependent) with availability needed from 19th to 22nd October and 2nd to 4th November 2026 (2 performances at 2 venues in South Wales). We will be recruiting the same roles for this project.
