Fees £35 per hour

Purpose of the Role

To provide high-quality LAMDA tuition to pupils across the Junior and Senior School preparing them for LAMDA examinations and supporting the development of confidence, communication, performance and public speaking skills.

The Tutor will deliver engaging individual, paired and small group lessons, working collaboratively with the Performing Arts Department to provide an inspiring programme that reflects the ethos and educational values of St Chris.

The role is offered on a self-employed, freelance basis. The Tutor will invoice the School for services provided in accordance with the agreed LAMDA Tutor Agreement.

St Chris is an independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 3 to 18 located in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire. Our School was established in 1915 and, since then, has been working to do things differently if, and only if, it makes things better for our students.

There are currently around 500 pupils on roll and 200 staff.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities of the role:

Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality LAMDA lessons for pupils initially in Years 4 to 11

Teach individual pupils, pairs and small groups.

Deliver tuition across a range of disciplines including:

Acting

Musical Theatre

Public Speaking

Introductory

Recital

Verse and Prose

Prepare pupils for LAMDA examinations and support them in achieving their full potential.

Monitor pupil progress and adapt teaching to meet individual learning needs.

Differentiate teaching appropriately for pupils with a range of abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), where appropriate.

Create a positive, engaging and inclusive learning environment.

Maintain accurate lesson registers and records as required by the School.

Liaise regularly with the LAMDA and Performing Arts Teacher regarding pupil progress, timetabling, examinations and operational matters.

Work collaboratively with colleagues within the Performing Arts Department, as reasonably required.

Comply with all LAMDA examination board requirements relating to teaching and examinations.

Maintain appropriate professional standards and undertake continuing professional development to keep knowledge and practice up to date.

Timetable and Availability

The School currently anticipates requiring approximately seven hours of tuition per week during term time, although this may vary according to pupil demand.

The School operates an A/B timetable and, to support curriculum delivery, the Teacher will be expected to provide availability across different days or half-days each week.

Lessons are normally delivered between 8.50 am and 3.40 pm.

Timetabling will be agreed in consultation with the LAMDA and Performing Arts Teacher and will be reviewed periodically to meet the operational needs of the School.

Qualifications, training and experience

Extensive successful experience in teaching LAMDA to pupils aged approximately 8 – 17 (Years 4 – 11) Excellent knowledge of the LAMDA syllabus

Experience teaching, Acting, Musical Theatre, Public Speaking, Introductory and Recital, Verse and Prose qualifications

A proven track record of successful LAMDA examination outcomes

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to motivate and inspire young people

Ability to adapt teaching to meet differing learning needs

Flexible and collaborative approach to working within a busy school environment

A Brief History of St Chris

St. Chris Established

St Christopher School (then
known as the ‘Garden City
Theosophical School’) was
established in 1915 by headmaster,
Dr. Armstrong Smith, ready for a
new style of education.

Initial Meeting of the School Council

The Council consisted of 32 students and staff and met on a fortnightly basis to discuss and legislate on school matters. From December 1920, decisions made by the Council were later ratified by a meeting of the whole school.

Abolishing Uniform

Following a protest in the school magazine, the School Council discusses abolishing school uniforms for boys. The motion is, eventually, passed but no action is taken. During the war, clothing rationing and difficulties for parents meant that uniform was relaxed in 1938.

Swimming Pool Built

Parents contribute an initial £600 towards building the school swimming pool and pupils aim to raise £1000 themselves in 1961. The community pulls together to remove topsoil, excavate and build the pool. By 1968, the pool and changing rooms were completed.

Theatre and Sports Hall Open

A drama festival of eight plays marks the opening in 1982. Over the next decade, the enthusiasm of pupils allowed an average of five school productions each year, ranging from Twelfth Night and Three Sisters to Blood Wedding and Accrington Paris.
