 What we do

Tackle uses the power and popularity of football to deliver HIV and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) information and services to young people on football pitches across the continent. We do this by training African football coaches, games teachers and community leaders to use fun, interactive football sessions with inbuilt sexual health messaging with their players. Alongside receiving sexual health information during football sessions, players also have the chance to access sexual health services at sessions and football tournaments, such as HIV testing, condoms and other contraception, and referrals to further clinical services. We have programmes in twelve African countries, run through partnerships with local community organisations and football clubs.

Summary of post

Tackle has been running Football Marathon Fundraising events for over 20 years, engaging over 7,500 players and raising over £3.5 million through a challenging yet accessible, 12-hour endurance football tournament. In 2027 we want to roll out the Football Marathon to 5 new cities in the UK.

The post holder will lead the successful creation and delivery of a Tackle Football Marathon in either Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle or Nottingham, supported by the central Tackle Event Fundraising Team. You will utilise your own extensive local football playing networks to participate in the Football Marathon as well as develop and mobilise new groups of local supporters.

Rather than an office-based role this requires networking and connecting with potential stakeholders within the community. Post holder must be based in the city the event will be delivered in, with potential visits to our other Football Marathon cities to work alongside other Regional Football Marathon Leads.

Responsibilities

Lead the creation and delivery or a brilliant Football Marathon

• Secure the venue and set the date for the 2027 Football Marathon
• Establish and run a committee of engaged volunteers to help recruit teams and further develop the event
• Recruit the target number of teams through your extensive football playing networks and local event promotion
• Lead the logistics for the event, with support from the central Tackle Fundraising Team
• Support the social media promotion of the event, led by Tackle centrally
• Promote the event and develop relationships with community groups including local football leagues, football clubs, social football platforms
• Engage and mobilise local businesses to sponsor and support the event

Key Skills

Above all, you need to be a highly motivated, resourceful, adaptable and self-sufficient individual and be able to build on existing and create new contacts within the Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle or Nottingham footballing networks.

• Prepared to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
