About the role

As a Food Service Assistant, you’ll be part of the team responsible for the food and hospitality experience at the National Memorial Arboretum on a 10-month fixed-term contract. This is a varied role where no two days need to look exactly the same. You could be serving visitors in the 380-cover Restaurant, working in the Coffee Shop, supporting a function or event for up to 500 people in the Aspects Events Centre, or helping deliver catering from one of the pop-up outlets across the Arboretum. Wherever you are working, you’ll play an important part in making sure visitors receive friendly service, well-presented food and a positive experience from the moment they arrive.

Come and be part of the leading Armed Forces charity, making a difference to the lives of those who have served to keep us safe and protect our way of life.

We’re looking for someone who understands what good food service looks like and takes pride in getting the details right. You’ll be involved in everything from preparing and presenting food and serving customers, through to keeping service areas clean, well organised and ready for the next visitor. You’ll also have the opportunity to support sales and promotions, work across different areas of the operation and build your experience across a broad range of catering and hospitality settings. Previous experience in a similar role is important, as is a good understanding of food safety and health and safety, but just as important is the way you work with people, you’ll need to be approachable, reliable and comfortable dealing with a wide range of visitors and colleagues.

The National Memorial Arboretum is a unique place to work, and the food service operation plays a key role in the wider visitor experience. We’re looking for someone who will take pride in being part of that, while being happy to get stuck in wherever the team needs support. The 10-month fixed-term contract offers the opportunity to bring your hospitality experience into a distinctive setting, gain experience across a broad catering operation and become part of a team delivering everything from everyday visitor service to large-scale events. The role includes weekends and evenings, so we’re looking for someone who enjoys a hands-on working environment, working as part of a team and having plenty of variety in their day.

Please note that this role will be based onsite at the National Memorial Arboretum, Burton-on-Trent DE13 7AR. The hours are 30 hours per week with working any 5 from 7, flexibility for this role is key.

Employee benefits include -

  • 28 day’s paid holiday (plus bank holidays) increasing with service, with optional annual leave purchase scheme of up to 5 working days
  • Enhanced paid maternity, paternity and adoption leave
  • Generous pension scheme with employer contributions ranging from 6% to 14%, depending on length of service
  • Range of flexible working options may be available, depending on your role
  • Employee Assistance Programme providing confidential counselling, financial and legal advice
  • Range of courses delivered by learning specialists to support your development goals and objectives
  • Opportunities to volunteer
