About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a Finance Manager to play a central role in shaping and delivering an effective, forward-thinking finance function for Strathcarron Hospice and its subsidiary trading companies.

The post holder will fully contribute to the management, development, and implementation of a comprehensive financial team, leading on budgeting, financial reporting, and driving efficiencies that support the organisation’s long-term sustainability.

About You

You will bring strong financial expertise combined with a values-driven approach to your work, demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and compassion in all that you do.

Professional or part-qualified accounting qualification

Experience working in finance, accounting, or bookkeeping

Strong working knowledge of financial processes, accounting principles, and reporting systems

Experience using and implementing financial reporting systems

Excellent PC skills, especially Microsoft Office and financial reporting tools

Ability to communicate financial information clearly to colleagues and managers

Understanding of Gift Aid requirements

Proven ability to manage your own workload and adapt to changing priorities

Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a team

Experience supervising or line-managing staff, with the ability to support, develop, and motivate others

Flexible, proactive approach with a commitment to accountability, performance, and continuous improvement

The post is subject to a Level 2 check by Disclosure Scotland.

Finance Manager Job Description

Purpose of the Role

The Finance Manager will fully contribute to the management, development, and implementation of an effective and forward-thinking finance function for Strathcarron Hospice and its subsidiary trading companies. This is a key role in budgeting, financial reporting, and driving financial efficiency across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Manage day-to-day financial operations, ensuring a strong financial control environment and supporting delivery of change projects

Investigate financial issues and respond to financial enquiries, liaising with third parties and colleagues across departments to provide advice and support

Line-manage and delegate work to the Finance Assistant and Finance Volunteers, ensuring high standards, accuracy, and compliance with policy and professional accounting standards

Assist with cash flow management and preparation of cash low forecasts

Support the preparation of the annual budget, monitor monthly budget performance, and analyse variances between budget and actuals

Prepare management accounts for the Hospice and subsidiary companies

Support treasury activities and general banking, including monthly reconciliations

Oversee the asset register

Lead on the compilation and submission of Gift Aid tax claims

Prepare quarterly VAT returns (partial exemption model; charity VAT knowledge desirable)

Supervise purchase ledger, sales ledger, and general ledger processes, including accruals and prepayments

Assist with monthly payroll reconciliation and processing

Support preparation for the annual audit

Ensure restricted and designated funds are accurately accounted for

Contribute to the monitoring and updating of financial policies and procedures

Work collaboratively as part of the wider Hospice team to support strategic aims

Ensure adherence to legal, tax, and regulatory requirements

Undertake any other duties appropriate to the post

Knowledge Skills and Experience

Terms and Conditions: Strathcarron Hospice Terms and Conditions.

Location: Strathcarron Hospice

Salary Scale: Band 6 £41,668 - £50,775 per annum (pro rata for part time)

Hours: Full time or Part time hours per week

Employees may be required to vary the pattern of their working week subject to the exigencies of the service.

Duration: Permanent

Annual Leave: 27 days rising to 29 days after 5 years’ service and to 33 days after 10 years’ service plus 8 public holidays (pro rata).

202.5 hours rising to 217.5 hours after 5 years’ service and to 247.5 hours after 10 years’ service plus 60 hours’ public holiday (pro-rata).

Sick Leave & Pay: In accordance with Strathcarron Hospice provisions

Pension: This post is superannuable under the Falkirk Council Local Government Superannuation Scheme and your remuneration will be subject to deduction unless you choose to opt out of the scheme.

Right to work in the UK: Strathcarron Hospice has an obligation to ensure it does not employ any worker who has not been granted the relevant permission to work in the UK. This permission is without exception granted by the UK Border Agency. We are required to check the entitlement to work in the UK for all prospective employees, regardless of nationality or job category

If the duties of this post require the declaration and validation of criminal convictions, the successful candidate will be required to complete a Level 1 or Level 2 Disclosure Scotland check prior to any offer of appointment being made.
