The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships. We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won’t be solved by science alone.

We are looking for an Enterprise Risk Manager to join our team.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

The Risk Team at Wellcome provides professional guidance, advice and support in respect of risk and risk management to everyone working within the organisation in support of the delivery of our mission. This includes the development and delivery of the corporate risk management framework, insurance programme and business continuity arrangements.

What will I be doing?

You will work closely on the enterprise risk management agenda, collaborating with senior colleagues to ensure the board fulfils its statutory responsibilities to identify, assess, manage and mitigate the organisation’s key risks. You will work across multiple departments to embed and promote a proactive risk management culture and methodology, and you will be responsible for coordinating the organisation’s insurance and business continuity programmes.

As an Enterprise Risk Manager, you will:

  • Implement and embed Wellcome’s enterprise risk management framework, supporting corporate and departmental risk processes and reporting.

  • Partner with Executive Leadership, Risk Champions and other stakeholders to promote a proactive risk management culture, providing expertise, training and workshops.

  • Have responsibility for rolling out and executing Wellcome’s periodic risk assessment process (Risk Control Self Assessment) and compiling regular risk reports to executive and governance committees.

  • Acting as a risk consultant, advising different areas of the organisation on risk consideration in relation to new and ongoing programmes.

  • Build strong relationships with Wellcome’s subsidiaries to support their risk management programmes and contribute to a consistent approach across the group.

  • Support the delivery and management of Wellcome’s business continuity programme and the operational and investment property insurance programmes, including renewals and broker/valuer relationships.

  • Champion Wellcome’s policies, principles and commitment to a diverse and inclusive culture, undertaking additional duties as required.

Is this job for me?

This role suits you if you enjoy working at the heart of how an organisation makes decisions, using your analytical skills and judgement to help senior leaders understand and manage key risks. It plays to strengths in relationship building and influencing, as you will work with a wide range of stakeholders to embed a proactive risk culture, improve frameworks and processes and support business continuity and insurance. You will have variety, clear accountability and the chance to make a tangible impact on how Wellcome operates, while contributing to a diverse and inclusive culture.

To apply for this role please submit an updated CV and answer 2 application questions to demonstrate that you meet the minimum requirements for the role.

Minimum Criteria:

  • Appropriate qualifications and strong enterprise risk management experience, with a good understanding of non-financial risk and control frameworks.

  • Proven experience implementing risk management practices and helping to improve risk culture across an organisation.

  • Proven experience in conducting business as usual risk assessments, with strong report writing skills.

  • Desirable experience in managing insurance programmes and supporting business continuity planning.

  • Ability to think creatively to improve process and procedural efficiency, and to drive those improvements through to implementation.
