Energy Champions

FEL is the Scottish environmental charity that’s changing our world for the better, project by project.

We believe that powerful change can be simple to make, and we design the collaborative social and environmental projects that deliver it – helping everyone take small steps to make their lives better and the world a healthier, happier, more sustainable place.

Now we’re looking for the best people to keep us striding in the right direction.

Overview

Within our FEL Energy team, we help individuals and communities take control of their energy use, save money, and reduce their carbon emissions. We are now looking for Energy Champions to help us deliver our work.

Energy Champions are community volunteers who use their own lived experience of reducing household energy use and bills to inspire others. Having taken practical steps – such as installing renewable technologies, improving insulation, or changing everyday energy behaviours – Energy Champions support local households and communities by sharing real‑world examples of what is possible.

Working alongside our Energy Advisors, Energy Champions help bring energy advice to life. By acting as relatable case studies, they show householders the tangible benefits of renewable technologies and energy‑efficiency measures, including lower bills, warmer homes and improved wellbeing.

Based within their own communities, Energy Champions are approachable voices who help demystify energy improvements and build confidence among households and communities who may feel unsure, sceptical, or overwhelmed by energy decisions. Their stories help people see that positive change is possible, practical, and achievable.

What You’ll Do

As an Energy Champion, you will:

Accompany Energy Advisors on community events, workshops, or open days to share your personal experience as a real‑life case study to build trust and motivation among people

Talk honestly about the energy challenges you faced, the measures you adopted (such as renewables or energy‑efficiency improvements), and the outcomes you’ve seen, including cost savings, comfort improvements, or reduced energy use

Help householders and community groups understand renewable and energy‑saving technologies in an accessible, jargon‑free way

• Act as a peer supporter, answering everyday questions from a lived-experience perspective rather than a technical one

• Work closely with the Energy Team, feeding back common concerns, misconceptions, or barriers that households raise

Help normalise conversations about energy efficiency and renewables within your community, encouraging more people to implement climate-friendly steps

What You’ll Bring

You don’t need to be an expert at all. This role is ideal if you:

Have taken steps to reduce your household energy use or bills (for example through insulation, heating upgrades, renewables or behaviour change)

• Are comfortable sharing your personal experience with others in a supportive and informal way

• Enjoy meeting people and contributing to positive change in your community

• Are interested in sustainability, climate action, or reducing fuel poverty

• Want to help others feel confident making energy improvements

Support & Training

Energy Champions receive:

• Ongoing support from our FEL Energy Team and Climate Team

• Briefings on current energy‑efficiency measures, renewables, and available support schemes

Opportunities to take part in skill‑sharing sessions, workshops, and community learning events

• All materials and resources needed to support events and visits

• Introductory and bespoke ‘Stay Warm, Stay Well’ training through Energy Action Scotland covering:

Introduction to EAS and the ‘Stay Warm Stay Well’ training

− Fuel poverty causes and effects

− Cold damp homes and health impacts

Condensation dampness

− Energy efficiency

Heat loss in the home

− Paying for fuel and fuel debt issues

− Sourcing help and effective signposting

− Tariffs and switching

Time Commitment

This is a flexible voluntary role. Most volunteers contribute 3–6 hours per month, depending on local events and availability.

We're happy to work with you to shape this role around your interests and time.

Impact of This Role

As an Energy Champion, you will help to:

• Increase trust and engagement with energy advice services by making them locally relevant

• Reduce fuel poverty and household energy costs

Improve comfort, health, and wellbeing in local homes

• Cut carbon emissions at a community level through place-based actions
