.The Electrical Technician plays a key role in delivering ILM Highland’s strategic objectives through the operational delivery of the Rescued and Ready project, with responsibility for repair output, product quality, and workshop support.

The role is primarily workshop-based at the Alness site, where all repair activity and community workshops are delivered. The postholder will manage the full lifecycle of small appliance repair, from fault diagnosis through to testing and resale readiness.

The breadth of the role includes technical repair and refurbishment, compliance and safety testing, workshop facilitation, and contribution to wider reuse and recycling operations. The postholder will work closely with the Community Engagement Officer to deliver practical, hands-on learning experiences for community participants.

The role carries responsibility for meeting repair throughput targets, maintaining safety and compliance standards, and contributing to the overall success and growth of the Rescued and Ready project. The postholder will also contribute to organisational impact by increasing reuse rates, reducing waste, and supporting income generation through resaleable goods.

No direct budget accountability. Works within agreed service funding parameters and demonstrates awareness of cost considerations, including efficient use of materials, parts, and resources.

People Responsibility

No formal line management responsibility.

Responsible for transactional finance activities across two companies, including purchase ledger, sales ledger, reconciliations, banking and payroll administration. The role operates within established financial procedures and internal controls, exercising judgement within defined parameters and escalating non-routine matters to the Finance Manager. Provides financial information to support operational and management decision-making

People Responsibility

Financial & Resource Responsibility

Processes and monitors financial transactions across multiple departments. Provides budgeting information and financial data to support decision-making, but does not hold direct budget accountability.

    • Process supplier invoices, credit notes, and purchase orders
    • Prepare and issue customer invoices and statements
    • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and petty cash
    • Process employee expense claims and reimbursements
    • Monitor and maintain accounts payable and receivable ledgers
    • Follow up on overdue customer payments professionally
    • Match, batch, and code invoices
    • Set up new supplier and customer accounts
    • Maintain accurate financial records and filing systems
    • Support the Finance Manager during internal audits and compliance checks
  • Provide general administrative support to the Finance and Retail team

Manages workload on a weekly cycle aligned to payment runs, payroll deadlines and month-end processes. Contributes to ad-hoc financial projects which may extend planning timescales beyond routine operational tasks.

Exercises autonomy within established financial procedures and internal controls. Uses judgement to resolve discrepancies and investigate anomalies, escalating non-standard, high-risk or strategic matters to the Finance Manager.

Resolves primarily transactional and procedural issues, such as invoice discrepancies or reconciliation variances. Requires attention to detail and analytical ability to investigate irregularities. Errors could result in financial inaccuracy, delayed payments, reputational impact or compliance issues.

Repair & Refurbishment

  • Diagnose faults and repair small household electrical items (e.g. kettles, toasters, microwaves, lamps, hairdryers)
  • Refurbish items to a safe, functional, and resaleable standard
  • Maximise reuse potential and minimise waste through effective repair practices
  • Ensure consistent quality of repaired products

Testing & Compliance

  • Carry out PAT testing and ensure all items meet required safety standards
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, testing, and product status
  • Ensure compliance with relevant electrical safety regulations and ILM procedures

Workshop Support & Delivery

  • Co-deliver community repair workshops in collaboration with the Community Engagement Officer
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and instruction to participants
  • Promote safe working practices and support participant confidence in repair skills
  • Adapt support to suit varying levels of ability and experience

Workshop Setup & Management

  • Establish and maintain a dedicated small appliance repair area within the workshop
  • Manage tools, equipment, and spare parts inventory
  • Ensure a safe, organised, and efficient working environment at all times

Operational Support

  • Contribute to ILM Highland’s wider reuse and recycling operations
  • Support the growth and development of small appliance reuse within the organisation
  • Ensure repair activity aligns with service demand and project priorities

Plans and organises daily activities to ensure stock is processed, repairs are completed, and customer demand is met, consistently achieving daily throughput targets.

This includes:

  • Prioritising repair workload based on stock levels, demand, and project requirements
  • Coordinating repair activity alongside workshop delivery schedules
  • Ensuring availability of tools, parts, and equipment required for efficient operation
  • Supporting the preparation and setup of workshops delivered at the Alness site

Exercises autonomy in assessing product viability, determining repair approaches, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

This includes:

  • Deciding whether items are suitable for repair, reuse, or disposal
  • Selecting appropriate repair methods and materials
  • Ensuring all items meet safety and quality standards prior to resale or use in workshops
  • Making practical decisions to maintain workflow and meet targets
  • Escalating complex or non-routine issues where necessary

Resolves a range of technical and operational issues relating to small domestic appliance repair and workshop delivery.

This includes:

  • Diagnosing faults and identifying effective repair solutions
  • Addressing challenges relating to parts availability, repair feasibility, and product condition
  • Ensuring safe resolution of faults to avoid risk to users or participants
  • Supporting workshop participants to overcome practical challenges during learning
  • Managing competing priorities between repair output and workshop support

Incorrect decisions could result in safety risks, financial loss, or reputational impact, requiring careful judgement and attention to detail.

Essential:

  • Proven experience in electrical repair
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing small electrical appliances
  • Knowledge of electrical safety standards and PAT testing
  • Strong practical skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Desirable:

  • Relevant electrical qualification
