About the role

As Domestic Assistant, you will provide services to deliver and support the smooth and efficient
operation of the boarding houses and facilities services, maintaining a professional, friendly and warm
atmosphere at all times.

Key responsibilities

•  Support Senior House Staff as part of the adult pastoral team, helping to maintain the warm,

friendly and homely atmosphere essential to the boarding house.

•  Follow instructions from Senior House Staff and the Domestic manager on all aspects of house

operations and cleaning routines.

•  Work in full compliance with the School’s Health and Safety Policy, including COSHH and all

relevant regulations.

•  Carry out cleaning duties to a consistently high standard.
•  Report any damage promptly to Senior House Staff or the Domestic Manager, completing the

required Estates paperwork and forwarding it to the appropriate department.

•  Order cleaning supplies from central stores and maintain minimum stock levels in a secure,

ventilated cupboard.

•  Manage laundry processes: checking dirty laundry out, receiving clean laundry, and issuing

items to pupils as required.

•  Support the laundry assistant in washing and folding of laundry under direction.
•  Record and prepare dry-cleaning items for external providers via the internal laundry, following

guidance from the Head Housekeeper.

•  Undertake basic repairs to clothing, curtains and similar items, or pass them to a seamstress

with the Head Housekeeper’s approval.

•  Assist in preparing the House for commercial lets.
•  Support residential courses held in the House during the summer holiday period.
•  Contribute to the Domestic Team’s annual deep clean of the Boarding House at the end of each

summer.

•  Attend required training sessions.

•  Submit termly pupil charge lists to the Domestic Manager for special laundry, dry cleaning,

holiday trunks, extra laundry and any other relevant charges.

•  Monitor house food supplies, whether delivered or collected by Prefects, in line with

established routines.

•  Provide an appropriate adult presence in the house as required.
•  Carry out any other reasonable duties requested by Senior House Staff or the Domestic

Manager to support the smooth and effective running of the boarding house.

Additional duties

•  Carry out a wide range of cleaning duties across designated areas of the School site, as allocated
by the Domestic Manager. Responsibilities and locations may vary according to operational
needs.

•  Empty and clean bins, disposing of waste in designated areas and taking particular care with any

items that may pose a risk to staff or pupils.

•  Vacuum or sweep all carpeted and uncarpeted areas, and wash or mop floors in assigned

locations.

•  Dust or wipe desks, seats, ledges, skirting boards and all surfaces where dust accumulates, using

clean cloths and dusters.

•  Clean toilets and toilet areas, including hand basins, wall tiles, and mirrors.
•  Empty vacuum cleaners as required, clean and check all equipment and cables for signs of wear,

store equipment safely, and report any faults to the Head Housekeeper.

•  Provide support in the Boarding Houses during commercial lettings, as required.

You will be expected to:

•  Conduct yourself with professionalism, tact and diplomacy at all times as a representative of Kingswood
•  Observe health and safety procedures and work safely at all times
•  To comply with all school policies and procedures including reporting any concerns to the appropriate

person in relation to those covering child protection, health, safety, welfare, security, confidentiality and
data protection.

No job description can fully cover all aspects of the role and consequently the responsibilities are likely to
evolve and change over time.

Skills, qualifications and experience

You will have a friendly, professional and positive attitude, with a warm and caring approach to your
work. You will be highly organised, punctual, reliable and trustworthy, able to manage your time
effectively and work both independently and as part of a team. You will take pride in maintaining high
standards of cleanliness and hygiene and bring sound knowledge and experience of cleaning practices,
Health and Safety requirements and Manual Handling guidelines. A good general level of fitness is
essential, as the role involves lifting and carrying within HSE guidelines. You will also have strong
interpersonal skills, enabling you to interact appropriately with members of the school community, and
the emotional resilience needed to remain calm under pressure. A commitment to equal opportunities
and anti-discriminatory practice is essential.

You should be flexible, self-motivated and open to new ideas and ways of working, with a proactive
‘can-do’ attitude. Experience of relevant professional development and familiarity with safe use of
cleaning machinery would be advantageous.

Child protection

It is your responsibility to help promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for
whom you are responsible, or with whom you come into contact, and to adhere to and ensure
compliance with the School’s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times. If, in the course of carrying
out the duties of the post, you become aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of
children in the school, you must report any concerns to the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Protecting children from the risk of radicalisation is part of the School’s safeguarding duties (under the
Prevent Duty).

Competencies

The Kingswood Competency Framework sets out the expected level of performance at a given level –
the ‘competency profile’.

The competency profile is used to support objective setting, appraisal, and continuous professional
development planning.

Terms and Conditions

This is a full-time, year-round position with a standard working week of 37 hours. Normal working hours
are 8.00am to 4.00pm, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 8.00am to 3.30pm on Wednesdays,
with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break each day.

The role offers a paid holiday entitlement of 6.6 weeks per year (equivalent to 33 days), inclusive of
public bank holidays. While the School typically closes for a period over Christmas, the specific dates are
determined annually by the Senior Management Team. Any additional non-working days granted during
this closure period are discretionary and do not form part of the contractual holiday entitlement.

The salary for this position is £25,557.73 per annum.  The role is fixed term to cover maternity leave
until 31 August 2026, or the return of the postholder, whichever is earlier.
