An exciting opportunity to join the Tron Theatre as their next Director of Finance and Operations, playing a vital part in the development and implementation of the organisation’s strategy.

  • Location:Glasgow
  • Salary:£50,000
  • Closing date:9 a.m. Friday 29th May

Established in 1982, the Tron Theatre is one of Scotland’s leading building-based theatres with its own in-house production company. They deliver an exciting programme of work servicing the needs of Glasgow and West of Scotland communities, as well as enjoying a strong UK and international profile.

The Director of Finance and Operations will work closely with the Artistic Director, who is also the CEO and the Board of Directors to advise on financial planning, budgeting, people management, governance and regulatory responsibilities for the Tron.

The Tron is a thriving creative and cultural hub for the local arts community, with creatives encouraged to use our public spaces to meet and discuss.

Located in Glasgow’s Merchant City and Trongate area, the theatre consists of an atmospheric 230-seat main auditorium, 62-seat changing house studio, a workshop space, the Victorian Bar (now converted into a workshop, events and rehearsal space), café bar, box office and office accommodation for administration and production staff.

  • Create exciting and brilliant theatre for our audiences:Through engaging the talent primarily of the Scottish-based theatre community, the Tron aims to present exciting and provocative new and contemporary classic theatre of the highest quality for the people of Glasgow, the West of Scotland and on an international scale.
  • Continue as a point in Scotland for developing new and emerging talent:To programme work, mentor, enable and provide space for new talent, including emergent theatre companies, emergent producers, writers, performers, designers and other theatre makers — artists primarily from the West of Scotland but also with a national remit. TheTron CREATIVE segmentof our work includes many important new initiatives, including Outside Eyes and LabWeek.
  • Become a key contributor to the Scottish touring infrastructure:Tron Theatre intends to keep developing a number of strategies for taking work elsewhere in Scotland. This is through co-productions and enabling companies premiering their work at Tron Theatre to be equipped with the necessary mechanisms, practical support and mentoring to go on to tour their work around the country.
  • Respond to the very special theatrical interest not only in Glasgow but throughout the West of Scotland:We do this through a combination of in-house productions and a wide range of visiting companies. We stage the more experimental and new work, largely confined to the studio space and the more accessible but still cutting-edge work is staged in the main auditorium. All the work has been new or contemporary with the exception of the occasional classic play and the aim has been to predominantly employ Scotland-based artists – performers, musicians, designers, directors and writers.

During this time, we have particularly pursued our aim of supporting emergent artists and theatre companies by giving them space and resources to develop new work and present it to the public.

Working closely with the Artistic Director and senior management team, you will lead and shape organisational strategy and culture, as well as implement systems, solving operational problems and supporting colleagues across the organisation.

The role provides the essential financial stability of the Tron’s artistic and creative ambitions, its operations and administration, its HR/people and its building and plant.

You will support the Tron as a key contributor to the artistic life of Glasgow, Scotland and beyond. You will also contribute to its future growth through the development of the Tron’s work onstage, its participatory programme and its place as an historic building in and for Glasgow — whose creative work is of national and international significance.

The Director of Finance and Operations is also the key senior leader for the successful financial management of Tron events, which manages the café/bar and its popular programme of space and facilities hire.

Within the Tron’s ambitions for artistic and organisational excellence is a strong culture of embedding equality, diversity and inclusion across the organisation and the recognition that the management of the Tron’s resources should minimise impact on the environment.

We’re looking for an experienced, hands-on strategic financial leader with a strong understanding of financial planning, budgeting, cash flow forecasting and statutory reporting.

You will have knowledge of effective governance, risk management and the regulatory requirements for a charitable/arts organisation, with expertise in leading teams through periods of change management or organisational development.

Having experience working within the performing arts, heritage or cultural sectors would be beneficial and you may have a professional qualification in finance or accounting.

Thank you for your interest in the Tron Theatre.

Established in 1982, Tron Theatre has built a renowned reputation for producing and presenting ambitious, contemporary and proudly subversive theatre that reflects the world we live in and represents the people of Glasgow and Scotland. We have established ourselves as a vital, creative hub for the Scottish theatre sector as a powerhouse of home-grown, contemporary Scottish work.

The Tron building, with its centuries-old heritage, stands proudly on the edge of the city, where the city centre meets the ever-changing East End of Glasgow. As well as the Tron’s self-produced programme, it provides a critical cog in the UK’s touring infrastructure, a vital incubator and supporter of emerging and mid-career talent and facilitates vibrant participatory arts opportunities for people across the city.

The circular economy of our organisation’s culture is paramount to our success, as it reaches into and invests in communities and works alongside participants, artists, schools, makers and audiences. By learning from these stakeholders, we draw this back into the work we present, building on Tron’s extraordinary history, expanding our touring offer and partnerships and inviting a plethora of new and familiar creatives and participants into the building. We are resolved to invite audiences to get excited with us and forge ahead together towards a new future.

The Tron team is a collaborative group of hardworking professionals, supported by an engaged and skilled board. This is a very exciting moment to be joining Tron as we move into our next chapter, with refreshed artistic leadership and strong funding relationships with Creative Scotland and Glasgow Life/Glasgow City Council.

We are looking forward to the future and, with this new Director of Finance and Operations role in place, the team will be further strengthened.

If this is the role for you, we very much look forward to hearing from you and to meeting you in due course.
