Diocesan Building Surveyor
This is a unique opportunity for a skilled Building Surveyor to apply their professional expertise in a role that directly supports the mission and ministry of the Church of England. This is a critical leadership role in the Property Department, and is the department’s technical lead in building surveying, across a significant and varied property portfolio of mostly resdiential properties, in one of the largest and most diverse dioceses in the country.
You will be responsible for co-ordinating the delivery of a professional management, repair and maintenance service for all our properties.
This role combines a hands-on role in overseeing vacancy works, dealing with the technical aspects of building projects, and overseeing our processes for repairs, maintenance and buildings related projects.
Key responsibilities are:
- Ensure that repairs and maintenance works are contracted with the most relevant contractors, overseeing tendering as necessary, inspecting work and providing robust feedback to contractors
- Direct and oversee all aspects of the refurbishment and other vacancy works which occurs when a clergy house is in vacancy
- Lead, motivate and oversee the team of technical building surveyors
Key Requirements:
- Professional building surveying qualification, preferably MRICS or Building Surveyor with significant demonstrable post qualification experience may be also be acceptable
- Experience in the implementation of programmes of planned maintenance, improvements and replacement of mainly domestic properties with a high degree of management and budget control skills.
- A commercial approach to the management of property, but with an understanding and empathy for the pastoral needs of the clergy and parishes.
- A good working knowledge of modern and traditional methods of building construction as they relate to a varied property portfolio including historic buildings.
About You
You are a qualified Building Surveyor with a passion for property and a desire to use your skills in a meaningful context. You will bring a blend of technical expertise, commercial acumen, and empathy.
- A professional building surveying qualification, ideally MRICS (or equivalent experience).
- Experience managing repairs, maintenance and refurbishment programmes for residential or mixed property portfolios.
- Strong project management, budget management and contractor oversight skills.
- Good knowledge of modern and traditional construction methods, including experience working with historic buildings.
- The ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
- A collaborative approach and an understanding of the pastoral context in which clergy housing is provided.
