Thank you for your interest in Newland House School. Our welcoming Pre-Prep and Prep School sits

on  a  5-acre  site  in  a  quiet  residential  area  on  the  edge  of  Twickenham  and  Teddington  in  South

West  London.  Established  in  1897,  Newland  House  is  one  of  the  oldest  and  largest  Independent

Prep Schools for children aged 3-13 in the area.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

We  are  seeking  an  exceptional  Deputy  Head  (Pastoral)  to  lead  behaviour,  wellbeing,  and

attendance  across  the  School,  creating  a  safe,  inclusive,  and  positive  environment  in  which  all

students  can  thrive.  As  the  Designated  Safeguarding  Lead  and  the  School’s  Mental  Health  Lead,

the Deputy Head (Pastoral) champions the highest standards of pastoral care and safeguarding.

They will line-manage all Heads of Year and Heads of House, overseeing key pastoral events and

ensuring these are seamlessly integrated into the whole-school calendar. As a vital member of the

Senior Leadership Team, they work closely with the Head and Bursar and Deputy Head (Academic),

and as part of the Senior Management Team, they collaborate with the Head, Bursar, and Deputy

Head  (Academic),  Assistant  Head  (Pre-Prep),  and  Assistant  Head  (Operations).  Reporting  directly

to the Head, the Deputy Head (Pastoral) plays a central role in shaping and sustaining the School’s

pastoral strategy and culture.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The  Deputy  Head  (Pastoral)  plays  a  crucial  leadership  role  within  the  School,  ensuring  that  every

student  thrives  in  a  safe,  supportive,  and  inclusive  environment.  This  role  combines  strategic

oversight  with  hands-on  pastoral  leadership,  encompassing  behaviour  management,  student

wellbeing,  attendance,  and  safeguarding.  Working  closely  with  the  Senior  Leadership  Team  and

Senior  Management  Team,  the  Deputy  Head  (Pastoral)  shapes  the  School’s  pastoral  vision,

implements  policies  and  initiatives,  and  provides  guidance  and  support  to  staff  and  students  alike.

The  responsibilities  outlined  below  reflect  the  breadth  and  impact  of  this  role  in  nurturing  the

development, welfare, and success of the whole school community.

Main duties and responsibilities

Line Management Responsibilities:

• The postholder will oversee, support and performance-manage the following roles –

     - Heads of Year

     - Wraparound Care Manager

     - Holiday Club Manager (alongside Bursar)

     - Extra Curricular Clubs Coordinator

Behaviour and Culture:

• Lead the development and implementation of the School’s behaviour policy, promoting a culture

of kindness, respect, and high expectations.

• Oversee  and  support  the  personal  development  of  all  students,  ensuring  their  wellbeing,

resilience, and growth.

• Direct the House system, working closely with Heads of House to deliver a diverse and engaging

programme of activities and events.

• Ensure  consistency  and  impact  in  the  application  of  rewards  and  sanctions,  providing  guidance

and support to staff in implementing effective behaviour strategies.

Wellbeing, Mental Health, Attendance and Inclusion:

• Lead  the  School’s  pastoral  care,  wellbeing,  and  mental  health  strategy,  implementing  proactive

programmes and providing targeted support to meet the needs of all students.

• Monitor  attendance  and  punctuality  data,  leading  interventions  in  collaboration  with  Heads  of

Year to promote consistent engagement and participation.

• Oversee  and  coordinate  the  form  tutor  programme,  ensuring  it  effectively  supports  students’

personal, social, and academic development.

Main duties and responsibilities

Safeguarding and Pupil Welfare (DSL Responsibilities):

• Serve  as  the  School’s  Designated  Safeguarding  Lead  (DSL),  maintaining  up-to-date  Level  3

training and ensuring full compliance with statutory safeguarding requirements.

• Lead  the  development  and  embedding  of  a  strong  safeguarding  culture,  policies,  and

procedures, and ensure safer recruitment practices in collaboration with HR and Compliance.

• Coordinate  safeguarding  referrals,  case  management,  and  multi-agency  liaison,  providing

regular briefings to the Head and the Safeguarding Governor.

• Plan,  deliver,  and  maintain  safeguarding  training  and  updates  for  all  staff,  ensuring  robust

record-keeping and effective supervision of the DSL team, including Deputy DSLs.

Parent and Community Engagement:

• Plan,  coordinate,  and  deliver  key  pastoral  events,  including  parents’  evenings,  workshops,  and

wellbeing  days,  ensuring  all  dates  are  communicated  effectively  to  the  Assistant  Head

(Operations) for inclusion in the whole-school calendar.

• Communicate proactively and collaboratively with parents, keeping them informed and engaged

regarding  student  behaviour,  attendance,  and  wellbeing,  and  fostering  strong  partnerships  to

support student development.

Line Management and Staff Development:

• Lead, mentor, and develop the pastoral team, including Heads of Year, Heads of House, Head of

PSHE,  and  the  Wellbeing  Coordinator,  ensuring  high-quality  delivery  of  pastoral  systems  and

interventions.  Set  clear  objectives,  conduct  appraisals,  and  provide  ongoing  coaching  and

support to drive professional growth and impact.

• Analyse  and  use  data  on  behaviour,  attendance,  and  wellbeing  to  inform  strategic  decision-

making,  monitor  effectiveness  of  initiatives,  and  report  key  insights  to  the  Senior  Leadership

Team, Senior Management Team and Governors.

Extra-Curricular Provision:

• Oversee  the  School’s  extra-curricular  programme,  including  trips,  visiting  speakers,  clubs,

Wraparound  Care  (WAC),  and  Holiday  Club,  ensuring  all  activities  are  engaging,  well-

organised, and of high quality.

Teaching:

• Teach  a  small  timetable,  aligned  with  expertise  and  the  needs  of  the  School,  contributing  to

student learning and development.

Quality Assurance and School Improvement:

• Contribute  to  the  School’s  self-evaluation  and  improvement  planning  processes,  providing

evidence to support inspection readiness and ongoing development.

• Maintain  high-quality  communication  with  parents  and  the  wider  community,  representing  the

School professionally at all key events and engagements.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Contribute to self-evaluation and inspection readiness, particularly in the areas of behaviour and

attitudes, and personal development.

• Support  co-curricular  and  community  activities  that  enhance  student  wellbeing  and

engagement.

• Review  and  update  relevant  policies  to  ensure  they  reflect  best  practice  and  statutory

requirements.

• Maintain  high-quality  communication  with  parents  and  the  wider  community,  representing  the

School at key events and engagements.

• Assist the Head with staff recruitment, induction, and performance management, supporting the

development of a highly effective team.

• Contribute to the planning and delivery of INSET and whole-school CPD programmes.

• Support marketing, admissions, and outreach initiatives as a senior representative of the School.

• Attend  all  school  evening  events  within  the  pastoral  remit,  demonstrating  leadership  and

visibility.

• During  term time,  be  present on site whenever students are  in school,  ensuring availability for

pastoral and operational matters.

THE CANDIDATE

Qualifications

• Degree and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

• Commitment to ongoing professional development and continuing professional learning.

• Counselling, mental health, or behaviour leadership qualifications.

• NPQSL, NPQH, or an equivalent senior leadership qualification.

Experience

• Successful  leadership  of  behaviour,  attendance,  and/or  wellbeing  at  middle  or  senior  leadership

level.

• Experience liaising with external agencies and contributing to multi-agency meetings.

• Experience line-managing middle leaders.

• Experience contributing to inspection readiness and school evaluation processes.
