Corpus Christi College Cambridge Job Description Job Title: Deputy Café/Bar Manager Department: Bar Responsible to: Deputy Butler / Bar Manager Purpose of Job: To provide a first-class front of house service to ensure total customer satisfaction and an efficient, friendly and safe environment within the College bars, ensuring that licensing objectives are met while supporting student and commercial bar activities. Duties and responsibilities: Front of House Services • Ensure the smooth running of the College bars day to day operations in accordance with the schedule of services. • To maintain a friendly and safe environment for all bar users. • Ensure service standards and the presentation and cleanliness of all areas, including storerooms and cupboards, are maintained by all staff members. • Ensure high levels of service are delivered throughout all Catering outlets. • Ensure that the style of service suits the nature of each event. • To ensure all food and beverage preparations are produced in line with then tariff and to the standards directed by the Bar Manager. • Ensure allergen information to be presented to diners within the college is correct, and sufficiently communicated within the team, and appropriately to the college community. • Ensure all College equipment is well maintained and stored correctly: coffee machine, panini toaster, bar blender, milkshake machine, Laptop etc. • Responsible for the upkeep of service equipment: keeping stock levels etc. (in collaboration with the Bar Manager). • Assisting in monitoring ordering, stocktaking, and stock turnover. • To ensure all foods and beverages are labelled, stored, and handled in accordance with college and legislative requirements. • To assist on the counter during service time; encourage and participating in actively selling the product range. • To continually develop the café and bar offering, in collaboration with the Bar Manager, ensuring it is fresh, exciting and on trend. • Uphold College rules and ensure the correct behaviour and ambience is maintained during bar events. Deputy Bar Manager March 2026 Communication • Ensure effective communication between the Catering Management Team/Office, the Bar staff, • the Kitchen and other members of College as required in the Bar Manager absence. Liaise with the Bar Manager and other team members in relation to menu suitability and the appearance, quality, and temperature of food. • Motivate others and continually seek to improve standards. • Collaborate with the College Butler and the Bar Manager to deliver monthly team meetings and quarterly team building activities. Supervision of Staff • Organise Rosta, making sure shifts are well covered (in collaboration with the Bar Manager). • Organise function briefings for all staff connected with a particular function. • Supervise the bar staff during day-to-day service and events. • Empower staff and delegate as appropriate to allow them to reach their full potential. • Ensure that casual staff levels are controlled and managed within agreed limits. • Responsibility for the correct completion of Casual staff wages and paperwork in the absence of the Bar Manager. • Deliver and record department training as well as identify training needs making recommendations to address these needs to the Bar Manager. Licensing • To ensure the Bars operate within the licencing objectives set by current legislation and ensure all team members also achieve these objectives. • Ensure all team members are trained and deliver on the licensing regulations at all times. Health and Safety/ Training • Ensure all aspects of the Allergen Policy and Allergen Procedure Guide are always upheld, immediately reporting any deviations of policy whilst making recommendations for improving those procedures. • To maintain and improve current systems and procedures in all operational areas and to maintain and comply with all College and legal requirements including, employment, health and safety, fire and hygiene legislation. These procedures to be regularly monitored and updated in order to achieve service excellence and best practice. • Carry out a clean-as-you-go policy and duties in accordance with the cleaning schedule. • Working with the Bar Manager to identify areas of risk and implement the control measures identified. Whilst ensuring all team members have access to and are certified as understanding those Risk Assessments • Ensuring first aid boxes are properly maintained. Bar Cellar • Oversee the Bar Cellar and its stock holding (in the absence of the Bar Manager), undertaking quarterly stock takes. General • The Deputy Bar Manager is expected to be present regularly at all major College events and other important occasions stipulated by the Catering Manager in the Bar Manager absence. It is expected that the Deputy Bar Manager will carry out any other appropriate duties requested by the College from time to time (e.g. necessity of working within the Pantry department outside of term). • • Be flexible in covering in the event of absence. • Work with the Bar Manager to achieve the financial income and cost objectives as set by the Catering Manager. Deputy Bar Manager March 2026 • Health and Safety All staff must adopt a responsible and proactive attitude towards health and safety and to comply with any procedures as required by the College in order to ensure the health and safety of themselves, their colleagues and any other persons that may be affected by their actions. Person Specification Criteria Education/Qualifications • High level of spoken and written English. • Strong ability to communicate to a wide variety of people. • Basic Food hygiene certificate. • Level 2 or 3 food Hygiene • WSET or equivalent wine knowledge accreditation Knowledge/Experience • Proven track record of supervising a team. • Proven track record of working in a similar Catering establishment. • Ability to lead and inspire. • Planning and management of events Skills IT Skills • Service and wine skills • Basic numeracy • Able to work without supervision • Accuracy and attention to detail • Demonstrable understanding of Profit and Loss Accounts • Sound workable knowledge of Microsoft packages • Understanding of Uniware or similar POS systems Personal Qualities • Clean and tidy appearance. • Flexible attitude to work. • Trustworthy • Prepared to work additional • hours when required.
