This senior Registry role oversees Complaints and Conduct, Fitness to Study and other casework procedures, alongside the development and review of University Regulations, Codes of Practice and academic governance frameworks. You'll provide expert advice on complex casework, deputise for the Safeguarding and Prevent Leads, and contribute to major service improvement projects including Registry '27.

We're looking for senior HE registry experience, a track record managing sensitive casework or regulatory processes, and strong skills in policy development, stakeholder influence and team leadership. You should be educated to a postgraduate degree level or have equivalent experience. The ability to communicate in Welsh is essential for this post.

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview. Applications will also be considered to carry out this role on a part-time or job share basis.

Overview

The Directorate of Student and Academic Services brings together key professional services that support the student journey and enhance the academic experience at Bangor University. The Directorate comprises three main areas:

  • Registry,which oversees student administration and business support, and leads on quality assurance, academic enhancement, and curriculum management.
  • Student Life,which encompasses a wide range of student-facing services including Wellbeing and Inclusivity, Library Collections, Residential Life, Student Success (covering Teaching, Learning and Language Support, Careers, and Student Advice), and the Student Experience team.
  • Campus Services,responsible for the University’s day-to-day operational environment, including Facilities, Catering, Sport, the Nursery, and the Security and Response Team. From August 2025, it will also include the Management and Development Centre.

Together, these services work in close partnership with academic colleagues and other professional service directorates to provide a supportive, inclusive and high-quality environment in which students can thrive.

Purpose of the Job

The Head of Casework and Regulations, within Registry, is responsible for leading the University's student casework functions relating to Complaints and Conduct, Fitness to Study and Fitness to Practise procedures, and may also provide specialist advice on other casework matters including Academic Appeals, Academic Integrity and Fitness to Reside. The postholder leads the development, implementation and review of University Regulations, Codes of Practice, procedures, frameworks and guidance, ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements and alignment with sector best practice.

The postholder provides specialist advice and support to staff across the University on complex casework and regulatory matters, contributes to institutional safeguarding and Prevent responsibilities through deputising for the Safeguarding and Prevent Leads as required, and leads staff development and training within their areas of expertise. The role also contributes significantly to Registry and wider University projects, including Registry '27 and systems and process improvement initiatives, ensuring that services, regulations and processes remain effective, compliant and student-centred.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities of the Role

  • Lead and continuous improve student casework functions, ensuring the fair, effective and timely management of Complaints and Conduct, Fitness to Study and Fitness to Practise procedures in line with University regulations and sector best practice.
  • Provide expert advice to staff and decision-making panels on complex and sensitive casework, including conduct, complaints, appeals, academic integrity, fitness to reside, fitness to study and fitness to practise cases.
  • Oversee the development, review and implementation of regulations, codes of practice, policies, procedures and guidance across the student lifecycle, ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements and sector best practice.
  • Monitor higher education sector developments, including guidance from Medr, OIA, QAA and other relevant bodies, advising colleagues on implications for policy and practice.
  • Ensure robust governance for the review, approval and maintenance of regulations, policies and procedures, including consultation, version control and review processes.
  • Deputise for the University's Safeguarding and Prevent Leads, supporting case management, risk assessment, policy implementation and institutional responses.
  • Contribute to safeguarding, Prevent and casework training, guidance and awareness activities, ensuring staff can fulfil their responsibilities effectively.
  • Develop team knowledge, capability and professional practice through coaching, mentoring, training and continuous professional development.
  • Analyse casework trends, performance data and regulatory developments to identify emerging issues, inform service planning and support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Prepare reports, briefings and recommendations, analysing casework activity, regulatory developments, risks and improvement opportunities.
  • Build effective relationships across the University and with external organisations and professional networks to promote good practice and support service development.
  • Lead and contribute to Registry and University projects, including Registry '27, service improvement, business process review, systems development and curriculum management initiatives, ensuring regulatory and operational requirements are met.
  • Support the Academic Registrar and senior colleagues in delivering agreed priorities, service improvements and organisational change initiatives.
  • Manage staff and resources, ensuring effective deployment, clear accountability, high performance and an inclusive working environment.

  • Develop, implement, and proactively oversee relevant policies and procedures ensuring the service complies with relevant regulatory standards and institutional requirements.

  • Proactively identify, assess, and manage risks within the service, ensuring effective risk mitigation strategies are in place and regularly reviewed.

  • Lead collaborative working with Undeb Bangor in relation to the role, to strategically plan promote and develop an excellent student experience.
  • Proactively identify and implement solutions to enhance service effectiveness and student satisfaction, securing senior buy-in as required.
