Looking for an exciting opportunity to work with complex operational and financial data, supporting strategic decision‑making across a unique national organisation?

We’re recruiting a Data Analyst to provide essential insight that shapes how we manage and care for our historic waterways network. We are looking for a Data Analyst to join our Operations Support team, providing critical management information to senior leaders including the Chief Operating Officer, Regional Directors and Department Heads.

This role supports the Trust in the development, analysis, and delivery of operational and financial management information, contributing directly to our strategic goals, priorities, and statutory obligations.

Working Hours & Travel

This role follows 37 hours, 5 days a week, work pattern. This is a home‑based role, with occasional travel to our hub spaces for collaborative meetings. You should be able to reasonably commute to one of the following hubs: Leeds, Ellesmere Port, Burnley, Newark, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Gloucester

Role Overview

You will act as a key link across senior management—helping shape, analyse, deliver, and measure the success of performance strategies. A key element of this role is supporting the development of our business performance and analytical reporting, covering operational maintenance programmes, efficiencies, health & safety, finance, fleet and plant, assurance, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to developing, implementing and analysing work that delivers Trust priorities.
  • Interrogate systems to develop robust reporting on outcomes, trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Deliver timely, accurate and insightful reporting, including business analysis, monthly management information, and ad‑hoc reports.
  • Maintain and improve current measures, with a strong focus on automation.
  • Support development of new KPIs and management information tools.
  • Work with senior managers across the Trust to understand reporting needs and provide data that supports decision‑making.
  • Analyse data to identify trends and areas for improvement, communicating findings across the Trust.
  • Ensure high‑quality, accurate data collection and integrity, investigating and resolving anomalies.
  • Produce performance analysis to support the Executive, senior management, and teams in improving productivity and performance against KPIs.

About You

The ideal applicant will love working with data, quickly make sense of new systems, and enjoy turning insights into clear, meaningful stories. They’ll bring sharp analytical skills, great organisation, and a keen eye for detail to help drive confident decision‑making across the team.

Skills & Qualifications

Technical:

  • Experience working in unfamiliar environments and quickly developing analytical understanding of new sectors.
  • Strong experience in performance, productivity and cost‑control analysis.
  • Ability to obtain, extract and process data from external systems and supplier portals, ideally with automation.
  • Proficient in Power BI (or similar tools) for data visualisation and narrative reporting.
  • Experience producing clear communications and presentations aligned to data insights.
  • Experience in a continuous improvement environment or familiarity with lean principles (desirable).

General:

  • Strong IT skills across relevant platforms, with the ability to extract, interpret and present data effectively.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
