Artist Brief: Speaking Sculptures Project (Boston, Lincolnshire)

Froglife seeks a local creative artist in Boston or willing to travel to Boston, who can work on our exciting new project, Neighbourhood Wildlife Corridor: Boston and Beyond. The artist will engage people across Boston and create two collaborative art piece s (speaking sculptures) to raise awareness of local biodiversity and celebrate nature in Boston . The artist will plan and deliver workshops for the ‘speaking sculptures’ element of the project, and work with the project manager to achieve this , and finalise the art pieces to a standard to be ready for installation in a public place.
About Froglife
Froglife is a national nature conservation charity with a remit to conserve the UKs reptile and amphibian species and their habitats. We deliver our work through three programmes: Transforming Landscapes; Transforming Lives and Transforming Research.
A core part of our work includes undertaking habitat actions such as:
Creating and restoring freshwater bodies
• Building hibernacula and planting wildflower meadows
• Woodland , scrub , grassland management
• Species and habitat monitoring
Froglife works with v olunteers and local communities who help us achieve th ese actions. We also engage directly with individuals and groups from disadvantaged and vulnerable communities and neighbourhoods.

Neighborhood Wildlife Corridor: Boston and Beyond
Boston and Beyond is a two -year habitat and community conservation project running from August 2025 to July 2027. The project will enhance and connect wildlife habitats across Boston, Lincolnshire, restoring large ponds and improving surrounding terrestria l areas, while engaging local communities and communities under -served by the heritage sector. Actions include pond creations, wildlife gardening workshops, volunteer training and the creation and installation of ‘speaking sculptures’.
Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project aims to conserve freshwater, species, and urban wildlife heritage while empowering communities to value and care for their environments.
The project is in full delivery and has already completed 2 pond restorations at Jenny’s Wood, 6 large pond creations across RSPB Frampton Marsh and Freiston Shore sites, 5 small pond creations, 8 wildlife gardening workshops, sessions with schools , and volunteer days.
The Opportunity
The Creative Artist will oversee the Speaking Sculpture element of the project and work collaboratively with local communities across Boston to design and produce two public - facing sculptures, incorporating: Community -created artwork , one w ildlife habitat feature and s ound elements accessed via QR codes (nature sounds and local voices) . The Creative Artist will be supported by the Project Manager.
The Creative Artist will:
Plan and d eliver 12 workshops in the Boston area producing community art, representing the people and wildlife
• Design, and co create 2 ‘speaking sculptures’ based on the community workshops
• Create the s oundscapes element including production and installation of QR codes
Workshops
A session plan guide has been developed with room for discussion:
Session One: Education around project aims and local amphibian/reptile biodiversity. Drawing activities with participants creating pictures of local biodiversity. Working as a team to assemble their drawings for a wider design that will form the sculpture.

Session Two: Using clay to make individual animals, kept accurate with assistance from a Froglife nature expert, fit together on a board.
Session Three: Following a process of fabrication the board of clay animals will return as a metal construction to be painted by the group.
Session Four: Soundscape recordings will be made .
Session F ive: Completion of the finalized artwork. Animal habitat enhancements incorporated.

Person specification
Strong track record in community arts
Wide range of experience in engaging new audiences through creative resources,
Experience working with clay
Familiar with the process of fabricating / ability to source a fabricator
Interest in wildlife, particularly amphibians and reptiles
Ability to complete contract to time, cost, and quality
Payment and timings
Payment will be up to £320 daily rate, including VAT if applicable with additional material and installation budget for the creation of the sculptures.
Beginning July 2026 and ending in December 2026.
