About the Service Development Unit and Cancer Patient Information Services

We’re creating a brand new Service Development Unit within our Cancer Patient Information Services, and you’ll be a key part of that team.

This new agile, innovation focussed team will help us adapt our information services to the new ways our audiences are engaging with health content through a diverse range of channels. The team will also be instrumental in testing how we can personalise and tailor the journeys we take people on and create experiences that deepen the value and impact we offer.

Our Cancer Patient Information Services team includes our sector leading cancer information content delivered through our website, our nurse led helpline and our online peer support community Cancer Chat.

About the role

As our Content Designer, you’ll guide the team to reimagine and experiment with how cancer content is created and delivered. Working within our new Service Development Unit, you’ll design and create content prototypes that repurpose existing long-form information into modular, reusable formats that work across multiple channels.

You’ll be working as part of a small, focused team as well as collaborating with a network of colleagues across CRUK — all passionate about making a real, lasting difference.

What you’ll do

Content design leadership

  • Demonstrate and champion content design best practice within the unit, shaping our strategic approach to information formats and channels, modelling and evaluating new approaches.

  • Use analytics and user research to inform content decisions and champion user-centred design of content.

  • Champion content approaches that support personalisation for our patient audiences.

Content creation, prototyping and testing

  • Produce content prototypes based on our expert information in multiple formats: from long-form to short form to test in unit experiments.

  • Analyse the performance of content being tested and make recommendations for improvements.

  • Produce briefs for internal colleagues, freelancers or agencies to create additional text, image, and audio-visual content.

  • Make sure content being prototyped considers accessibility, following plain English and health literacy best practice.

Collaborate

  • Contribute to effective, fast-paced team working within the Service development unit.

  • Work closely with colleagues across our patient information services, creative studio, content excellence and UX functions.

  • Support partnering with external agencies and freelancers where needed for additional content production.

What you’ll bring

  • Expertise in user-centred content design for a range of channels.

  • Experience creating and testing content prototypes in different formats for public audiences.

  • Experience using data and analytics to inform strategic content decisions and measure performance.

  • Confident using a range of digital and AI tools and platforms for content prototyping and production.

  • Comfortable and motivated working in an agile, sprint-based way with curiosity and commitment to test-and-learn approaches.

  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive content practices for text, images and audio-visual content.

Desirable: Experience in charity cancer or other health information services; experience working in cross functional, fast-paced teams.

Join us and help shape the future of how we support people affected by cancer. Together, we’ll go further — faster.

Our organisation values are designed to guide all that we do.

Bold: Act with ambition, courage and determination

Credible: Act with rigour and professionalism

Human: Act to have a positive impact on people

Together: Act inclusively and collaboratively

We’re looking for people who can believe in and embody these organisation values and can use them to drive forward progress against our mission to beat cancer.
