Consultant – Research on Youth-Led, Leaderless Protest Movements in South Asia

PURPOSE
Amnesty International South Asia is recruiting a Research Consultant to produce a deep-dive report examining youth-led, leaderless protest movements in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The research will adopt a human rights-based and intersectional lens and will rely on qualitative interviews and desk-based analysis.The duration of this consultancy is 8-10 months long.

OBJECTIVES AND DELIVERABLES
- Developing a research action proposal in collaboration with Amnesty International South Asia.
- Conducting comprehensive desk research on youth-led protest movements in the three focus countries.
- Conducting qualitative interviews with relevant stakeholders, including youth activists, human rights defenders, and civil society actors who participated in protests.
- Applying an intersectional lens, ensuring inclusion of women and marginalized communities.
- Analysing and synthesizing findings into clear, evidence-based insights grounded in human rights standards.
- Devising actionable recommendations for civil society, international human rights organizations, think tanks, youth leaders for countering authoritarianism.
- Drafting and finalizing a high-quality comparative research output that meets Amnesty International research standards.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- At least 5 years' experience as a researcher.
- Demonstrated experience researching social movements, civic space, authoritarianism, or related themes.
- Experience conducting sensitive research in South Asia.
- Strong qualitative research and analytical writing skills.
- Knowledge of digital mobilisation and repression dynamics is desirable.
- Fluency in English. Knowledge of one other regional language is desirable.
