Job Title: Consultant in Palliative MedicineHours: Less Than Full Time (8 PAs) + 1 in 7 on-call (evenings and weekends)Location: Sydenham and Bromley, South East London

Founded in 1967 by Dame Cicely Saunders, St Christopher’s has played a pioneering role in shaping modern hospice care. Today, we seek to build on this reputation responsibly, focusing on what matters most for people with life-limiting illness in the community and inpatient unit. Alongside expert clinical practice, we are committed to education, research and improving people’s experience of death, dying and loss.

Working across two sites in Sydenham and Orpington, we serve a diverse population of people across Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark. Our multidisciplinary workforce of approximately 500 staff, supported by around 1200 volunteers, delivers specialist care across community and inpatient settings. As a charity led by a Board of Trustees, we rely on the generosity of our local communities and income from retail and other commercial activities to maintain our services.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join our clinical leadership team of consultants, nurses and allied health professionals. This is an important moment for hospice care. Demand is increasing, clinical complexity is rising, and closer integration across health and social care is essential. This new LTFT post strengthens our consultant body as we continue to adapt our services to meet these realities.

Addressing health inequalities is central to our strategy. We are committed to improving access to specialist palliative care for underserved communities and delivering culturally responsive care, and we are looking for a consultant who will actively contribute to this work.

We welcome applications from established consultants and from Specialty Registrars within six months of CCT in Palliative Medicine (single or dual accredited with Internal Medicine). Further information can be found in the job description.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible consultant for the Lewisham community team and consultant support to Lambeth and Southwark community team; providing clinical leadership alongside senior nursing colleagues and oversight within MDT meetings.
  • Participate in consultant rotation (aligned to service need) across Bromley, Croydon, the Inpatient Unit and Hospital at Home teams.
  • Contribute to a 1 in 7 on-call rota covering community and inpatient services.
  • Work with the Medical Director to support development of services, including integration with primary care and acute partners, and strategic work around inequalities, frailty and dementia.
  • Lead and contribute to quality improvement and clinical audit.
  • Support education, supervision and specialty training.

This is an opportunity to work in a hospice that values thoughtful leadership and collaboration. You will join a team that is committed to shaping sustainable, inclusive and person-centred care for the diverse communities we serve.
