The coastal and marine ecosystems and coastal communities of Cabo Verde have immense potential for growth and development. However, to fully realise this potential, there are a number of challenges that need to be addressed. These include managing multiple pressures from fishing, strengthening the enforcement of MPAs and developing robust management systems for marine resources, including strong co-management systems.
It is essential to improve coordination across the MPA network, as the unique conditions of each MPA and island require tailored policies that address specific needs. By focusing on sustainable practices, we can protect Cabo Verde’s unique and diverse ecosystems, which are home to many rare and endemic species. This will also strengthen food security, livelihoods and the well-being of communities that depend on marine resources.
The project aims to place 1,118.49 km² across 10 sites under new or strengthened protected area management. The intended outcome is the improved management of marine protected areas of global importance in Cabo Verde, and their sustainable use, in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders. The project will help Cabo Verde to make progress towards its international commitments and national objectives regarding marine conservation, poverty reduction and adaptation to climate change, and will serve as a model for other island nations.
The objective of this consultancy is to develop and support the implementation of a positive communication strategy on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and marine conservation in Cabo Verde, targeting local coastal communities and tourists visiting MPAs or participating in marine and coastal activities which benefit from them.
This includes generating a solid evidence base on knowledge, attitudes, practices and socio-economic dimensions related to MPAs among coastal communities, tourists, and tourism sector actors, and using these insights to design and implement audience specific communication campaigns that promote understanding, compliance and positive engagement with MPAs and marine conservation.
You will identify communications tools, messages and platforms for promotion of information on MPAs within the tourism sector and among coastal communities, as well as assess the socio-economic impact of the project’s conservation activities on the tourism sector and the economic valuation of coastal and marine ecotourism. You will also carryout the production of audience-specific communications about MPAs, delivery of training for the tourism sector and for community-tailored communication about marine conservation.
