Community Health & Wellbeing Project Worker
BritSom is a BAME led community organisation based in Barnet, supporting children, young people, families and elders through education, health, wellbeing and community development programmes. Our work promotes healthy lifestyles, environmental awareness and community cohesion.
Salary: £11,648 per annum (£16 per hour, 14 hours per week x 48 weeks)
Contract: Freelance, 12-month fixed term, with the potential for renewal
Payment Terms: You will be expected to invoice for your hours and to be registered as self-employed and be able to provide a Unique Tax Reference.
Working Location: BritSom @ The Eversfield Centre activities with occasional outreach/home visits
Reporting to: Programme Manager
Hours: 14 hours per week
About the Role
This is a community-facing role focused on improving physical health, mental wellbeing and access to services. You will coordinate weekly fitness classes, support delivery of practical health education workshops, and contribute to developing BritSom’s health advocacy offer (non-clinical). You will work closely with colleagues delivering food growing and cooking programmes to promote joined-up messages around nutrition, active lifestyles and preventative health.
Key Responsibilities
· Coordinate and deliver weekly fitness classes.
· Support preparation and delivery of health education sessions covering nutrition, physical activity, mental wellbeing and preventative health.
· Contribute to developing basic health and wellbeing advocacy support (non-clinical), including signposting to NHS and community services.
· Collaborate with staff delivering the Big Cook Healthy Eat programme to link fitness and nutrition messages.
· Promote healthy lifestyle and environmental sustainability messaging across programmes.
· Engage young people, alumni and wider community members in health activities.
· Conduct joint outreach/home visits to elders and isolated community members (wellbeing checks, invitations and signposting).
· Work with partner organisations to coordinate referrals and promote activities.
· Record attendance, workshop outcomes and participant feedback.
· Support in-house evaluation through simple data collection and reporting.
Person Specification
Essential
· Experience delivering fitness, wellbeing or community health activities.
· Knowledge of basic health promotion principles (exercise, diet, mental wellbeing).
· Strong facilitation skills and ability to lead mixed-ability groups.
· Experience engaging young people or diverse community groups.
· Good communication and coordination skills.
· Ability to undertake outreach/home visits with another colleague.
· Commitment to community empowerment, inclusion and cultural sensitivity.
Desirable
· Accredited fitness or health-related qualification (or willingness to train).
· Experience in community advocacy or signposting.
· Understanding of health inequalities affecting migrant and refugee communities.
· Experience working with elders.
