Job description
Job Purpose
This role offers the opportunity to develop research skills and contribute to data generation, and would suite candidates seeking to broaden their academic skill set an gain further research experience prior to progressing to the next stage of their Core or Speciality training career.
The Office for Rare Conditions (ORC) Registries comprise of global rare disease registries (e.g. SDM registries and GloBE-Reg) that support research and quality improvement projects across the world. The role will involve the participation in collecting, cleaning, analysing, and interpreting healthcare data that are entered into the above registries, to identify trends, patterns, and insights that can support the research initiatives.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Plan, design and implement projects or parts of projects, in conjunction with the ORC Registries team.
2. Contribute towards the applications for Ethics and Research Management approval, as appropriate and in conjunction with PIs.
3. Manage data handling and interpretation of research results and actively assist in writing papers for publication in appropriate peer-reviewed journals.
4. Prepare research and activity reports as required.
5. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and departmental research group activities.
6. Present work at internal and external seminars and national/ international conferences as appropriate to enhance the profile of the research group.
7. Contribute to the organisation of project-related workshops, seminars or conferences.
8. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan Inspiring People, Changing the World.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 MBChB or equivalent.
A2 Completed clinical Foundation Years Training or equivalent by the start of the post
A3 Registered with General Medical Council [GMC] and licensed to practice [or able to be registered if overseas candidate] or be eligible to obtain GMC registration and a licence to practise prior to commencing the role
Desirable
B1 BSc or equivalent intercalated degree.
B2 Evidence of distinction in career to date e.g. prizes, awards, bursaries.
Skills
Essential
C1 Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collegially to achieve a common goal
C2 Evidence of self-motivation, originality, innovation and the ability to work independently
C3 Good organizational skills including the ability to manage research projects
C4 Excellent communication both oral and written
C5 Sufficient clinical experience in medicine or related specialties that are relevant to the research group
Desirable
D1 Experience in research, especially in fields that are relevant to the research group
D2 Experience in undergraduate teaching or postgraduate teaching
D3 Experience of presenting oral or poster scientific communications
D4 Experience of writing and publishing scientific communications
Research Training
The successful candidate will have an assigned supervisor at the time of appointment. Clinical Research Fellows are encouraged to attend workshops and training in generic transferable skills organised by the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences Graduate School. Full details of the programme are available at http://www.fom.gla.ac.uk/RDTC/. Regular attendance and contributions to research meetings of the research group is expected. The appointee will have the option of registering for a postgraduate research degree at the University of Glasgow. The postgraduate research tuition fees shall be covered for one year at a UK level.
Clinical Work
For registered medical practitioners an honorary grading will be sought from the relevant NHS Service. This will usually be at the grade of Honorary ST1 [or equivalent]. Clinical activities will be limited to those required for research training and conduct of clinical research and an Honorary Contract from the NHS will be sought. Limited additional day time clinical experience, up to 2 sessions per week, may be available subject to the agreement of the supervisor and NHS Services Clinical Director. Where any clinical activities of a Service nature extend beyond the usual working week, confirmation in advance of any such responsibilities and agreement on additional payments must be obtained from appropriate NHS Services management. The individual will have a contract with the NHS Services via the appropriate directorate/division, which will specify the agreed amount of clinical work and the level of remuneration.
Funding Sources
The duration of funding is as specified in the post-specific information. It will be awarded on the basis of individual career achievement to date and the likelihood of the fellow contributing to an effective, existing research team. Salary will be aligned with the appropriate ST1 scale.
As noted above, there may be opportunities for additional salary supplements providing NHS cover [by negotiation with local NHS management and subject to prioritisation of research]. In relation to such supplements, the University will act as Paymaster only.
Research Training Base
The Clinical Research Fellow will be based at the Office for Rare Conditions Registries in the Office Block on the Royal Hospital for Children/Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus.

Teaching
There will be no regular commitment to teaching but research fellows are encouraged to contribute to both problem-based learning and clinical teaching sessions for undergraduate medical students when research commitments allow.
Assessment of Progress
- Written progress reports on projects on a monthly basis.
- Research in Progress presentations
- Reports/manuscripts of results of clinical trials undertaken, as appropriate.
- General assessment during clinical work and meetings
- Internal progress meetings
Future
Clinical Research Fellows will return to clinical training and may seek further research training at a later stage.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be on the Clinical Research Fellow scale: ST1 level ( The salary for this post will be £50,341, aligned with pay point 1 of the clinical academic (post 2009) pay scale. This reflects the level at which the role is positioned prior to candidates’ progression within core or speciality training)
This post is full time and fixed term from 5 August 2026 - 4 August 2027.
Although this activity constitutes part of the job, the management of the clinical activity will be the full responsibility of the NHS Organisation. In the unlikely event that the NHS Organisation withdraws the honorary contract, the University will not be able to continue this post and notice of termination will be served.
The post will carry an additional entitlement depending on on-call responsibilities. This banding payment is paid under a separate arrangement with the NHS for which the University acts as paymaster only.
