The Service Evaluation Project (SEP) is part of CLiP 1 for all students and is due to be submitted towards the middle of the placement (most projects will be submitted in December each year, the rest in June). SEP markers are required to mark (pass/fail) the projects submitted against GOC outcomes, and provide sufficient feedback that work that does not meet the standards can be reworked by the affected students.
The SEP requires students to plan and write up, using a structured template, an enquiry-based audit of practice data and evaluate it against a self-selected standard or benchmark. They must contextualise this in the light of sector expectations and provide recommendations for improvement (in quality or efficiency) in their practice setting, and in an alternative setting of their choice. The work is set to meet the GOC requirement that outcomes are assessed in line with GOC standard S3.12.
SEP markers will need to assess student performance against the selected GOC outcomes using a rubric provided by the College, to specific deadlines. They may also be required to take part in moderation activities.
Markers will need to:
- use the CLiP portal to access allocated projects and marking documentation
- evaluate the project against College marking criteria
- provide feedback to explain how a pass or fail outcome has been decided, and how a student can improve, with a particular focus on reworking sections where one or more GOC outcomes are not met
- take part in moderation activities, where required
SEP markers are expected to mark a minimum of 40 projects per year. They will be required to attend regular training which may be held remotely or face-to-face, and will receive support and feedback on their marking following each CLIP placement series.
Markers will be selected via an open application process.
They must be an optometrist registered with the General Optical Council (GOC) and a member of The College of Optometrists. They must be able to demonstrate continuous professional development and possess a methodical, accurate approach with a high level of attention to detail. They must also have experience of marking written work and be comfortable critiquing the presentation, use and evaluation of data.
Markers must be organised, IT-proficient have subject matter expertise from regular optometric practice, and prior educational experience.
Assessors are responsible for arranging their own transport if required (subject to reimbursement of reasonable costs), and IT and office equipment, and must have adequate broadband access for remote meetings.
Markers will receive the standard hourly rate for College educational activities and are expected to mark four projects per hour. Markers will be expected to attend training and an annual standardisation exercise for which they will also be paid.
For the avoidance of doubt, the College may amend these guidelines from time to time at its absolute discretion.
