We’re looking for a Climate Observation Supply Specialist to help us make a difference to our planet through the communication and supply of our meteorological data.

As our Climate Observation Supply Specialist, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work. This post is based in Edinburgh.

Our opportunity is part time, 18.5 hours per week, and we will try our best to consider those intending to work a job share. Whilst this is part time position, there is potential to increase to full-time hours in the future if agreed by all parties. Your world of expertise

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of climate observations, engaging directly with users.

You could be providing observations data to media users or supplying climate extremes data to help our Press Office respond to requests. You'll play a vital role in supplying UK quality-controlled climate data to a range of Met Office processes, products and services including forecast verification (e.g. warnings and Numerical Weather Predictions), weather and climate consultancy and for monitoring the UK and global climate.

Working as part of a small team of quality control experts, you'll support real-time and routine data delivery by ensuring data is supplied on time and at a suitable standard. You will provide expertise and insight into the quality and context behind the climate observations.

While this post operates normal working hours during the week, occasional weekend day working (up to five days a year) is required.

Your key duties:

• To lead, and be responsible for, the delivery of the real time and other routine surface-based observations data from the Climate Database to key customers and ensure these functions are provided to the agreed levels of quality and cost.
• To develop and maintain constructive working relationships with our customers and cross-functional Met Office teams and provide expert advice to senior managers to ensure the services for surface-based surface observations meet the varied and developing user requirements.
• To apply expert operational service delivery knowledge of surface-based observations and their use by the wide variety of customers to answer enquiries, provide statistics as well as develop quality management teamwork plans and strategies and support the development of the observations operating plan.
• Define and develop process documentation and standards for the delivery of quality management services for land-based surface observations and provide training and mentoring for the teams involved.
• To carry out continuing professional development in line with current and future needs of the Met Office and provide mentoring and training within the operational meteorology profession.

As our Climate Observation Supply Specialist, your total reward package will be up to £60,268 annually, which includes:

• £43,081 base pay.
• An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%.
• Unsocial Hours Allowance - Hourly Rate of £4.50 per hour for qualifying hours, may apply if the customer requires occasional weekend working, typically up to five days per year.
• Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave.

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

• Broad knowledge of surface meteorological observing systems and the characteristics of the data and quality challenges, and the ability to provide expert advice on these subjects. (Expert by Nature)
• Able to lead a team in the planning and prioritising work for the delivery of operational services to agreed standards, ensuring customer requirements are met and strategically important activities are delivered. (Better Together)
• Able to lead discussions with customers, suppliers or partners to identify how user requirements can be met and implement improvements in service delivery which may require the involvement of cross-functional teams. (Live & Breathe It)
• Able to provide expert advice on quality control processes and databases, and guide the design and development of new quality management systems. (Expert by Nature)
• Evidence of defining and implementing processes that govern the management of data and implementing improvements that enhance customer service and/or introduce more efficient working practices. (Expert by Nature)
• Experience using databases to query and retrieve data or an understanding of relational databases and prior programming experience which demonstrates the ability to convert requests for data into programming code. (Keep Evolving)
