About the role

According to Shelter, currently one in every 206 people in England are without a home. We believe the church is ideally placed to be at the forefront of addressing this critical need. Hope into Action’s mission is to enable the local church to house the homeless and we are now looking for a Church and Tenant Empowerment worker.

Your work base will be discussed at interview.

You will work in partnership with Whetstone Baptist Church to support and empower tenants in our house. These tenants will have experienced homelessness, and it will be your role to support tenants to set and work towards personal goals, to empower them towards a fulfilled life, and enable them to move on to independent living.

Whetstone Baptist Church will aim to provide prayer support, love and friendship for the tenants. This will involve actively engaging with the church and maintaining church interest in the Hope into Action project. The role includes training, equipping, and encouraging church volunteers as mentors and befrienders to the tenants.

About you

You will be passionate about working with the homeless and share our values. You will be able to work with both church leaders and church members. You will need to be able to work with tenants with support needs, from a wide range of backgrounds.

You will have good listening skills, be able to work flexibly with a team of volunteers. The ability to learn new skills will be important when working with the tenants and the team. We hope, in the future, to expand our work with the homeless. There may be potential of increased hours over time.

Please contact Fiona Bedford (07737 416610) for an informal discussion about this role.

About us

We are a newly established franchise of a national charity Hope into Action and are excited to open our first house in the area this year. We aim to provide not just shelter and housing but also the friendship and support of the church. Together with 100 churches, Hope into Action UK provides direct support to people on whom others have given up. Nationwide, Hope into Action homes have supported and accommodated a wide range of people experiencing homelessness: in recovery from addiction, rough sleepers, ex- prisoners, women and children fleeing domestic abuse, those coming out of rehab, former prostitutes, refugees, those suffering mental health issues and survivors of human trafficking.

We plan that our first home will have a heart for those who have been in prison.
