Job Description

Shaftesbury is the national disability charity supporting more than 4,000 children, young people and adults each year across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to live a life that truly adds up for them. Following four years of significant organisational turnaround, we are entering a period of stability and forward momentum. With income of £66.4m and an operating surplus of £5.3m, we are well positioned to strengthen our services in special education, residential and nursing care, supported living and community support. We now seek a Chief Financial Officer to lead our financial strategy and governance at this pivotal time.

Reporting to the CEO and serving on the Executive Leadership Team, you will lead Finance and IT, ensuring strong stewardship, insight and decision‑making across a multi‑site, mission‑driven organisation.

You will:

  • Shape Shaftesbury’s financial strategy, planning and risk management.
  • Ensure robust financial management, control and statutory compliance, including Charity Commission and SORP requirements.
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, cashflow and the production of high‑quality management information.
  • Oversee treasury, banking, investments and pensions, ensuring financial stability and effective use of resources.
  • Drive organisational efficiency, value for money and strengthened procurement.
  • Support tendering and growth opportunities across care and education services.
  • Lead and develop a high‑performing Finance team and provide managerial leadership to the Head of IT and the IT function.

The Candidate

You will bring significant experience leading a finance function within a complex organisation, with the judgement and credibility to advise the CEO, Executive Team and Board.

You will have:

  • A profession accounting qualification and strong technical grounding in financial leadership.
  • Significant business/ commercial acumen ideally gained within the private sector.
  • Experience of charity finance, including SORP, tax/VAT and robust financial control.
  • A track record of delivering strategic financial insight, effective planning and improved performance.
  • The ability to present complex information clearly and influence senior stakeholders.
  • Strong people leadership skills, with experience developing high performing teams, ideally including IT.

Sector experience in care, education or public sector commissioning is helpful but not essential.
