Are you a YSJ student who cares about ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard? Do you want to get more involved in the work of the Students’ Union?
The Chair of Student Council is responsible for ensuring that the voices of different student groups are effectively represented throughout the SU, University, and beyond. You’ll work with SU staff to coordinate and chair Student Council and SU Member Meetings, and work on developing student voice and accountability mechanisms at YSJSU. You’ll also join the SU’s Student Leadership Group, working with Presidents and Chairs to develop and deliver campaigns, projects, and activities to make student life at YSJ better for everyone.
Requirements
In order to apply for this role, you must fulfil all of the following requirements:
- Be a current student who is a member of the Students’ Union at York St John University at the point of appointment
- Be a current student between September 2026 and June 2027
- Be studying at the York campus
In addition, we’re looking for students with:
- Excellent team working, organisation, and time management skills
- The ability to work on your own initiative
- Empathy when working with students of all ages and backgrounds
- Basic administration abilities (e.g. use of Microsoft Office)
- A commitment to equal opportunities, integrity, and the Students’ Union’s core values
Main Duties
As Chair of Student Council, you will:
- Chair all meetings of Student Council and the Annual Student Members Meeting, ensuring meetings are conducted in a fair and proper manner
- Set the agenda for all meetings of Council
- Participate in relevant SU and University meetings
- Support the development of student voice and accountability mechanisms at YSJSU
- Write a summary report about the work of the Student Council at the end of the year
- Be a member of the Student Leadership Group
- Be an ambassador for the Students’ Union

Interviews:
The role of Chair of Student Council will be democratically appointed via interview by current Student Council members. A member of SU staff will also be in attendance at the interview to support the process, but they will not be a voting member on the panel.
